Could someone explain why one should use rather than the
generic element to animate a color-valued SVG attribute such
as fill or stroke?

At a first glance of the W3C SVG/SMIL specs I cannot see what extra
functionality animateColor provides; but, admittedly, I have merely
skim-read what are very long and complicated documents. Nor do any
SVG/SMIL tutorials or articles I have browsed point out any essential
difference.

I have experimented with the plain element, in the Adobe
plug-in, and it appears to do the required job of smoothly changing
colors, as does .
Am I overlooking some obvious (or not-so-obvious) difference?
