lost my mother to cancer this summer, shortly after lost a friend - a reporter and one of the brightest copywriters in Italy - who was kidnapped and then killed in Iraq.
this has probably been the best year since I am in business, but I had not the time neither the nerve (a little brain cell burn-out...) to pick up occasions as they showed. Fact is, I'm 'recovering' so to say, and occasions keep surfacing now and then, so I can start picking them up.
turned 31, looking for a home to buy. Real estate kills me. Made new friends.
learned that life is too fucking short not to have a bit of fun everyday.
learned to face things with a positive approach, no matter what, and be prepared to face the consequences of it.
learned that an ending, is a beginning in disguise.
learned that I've still a lot of things to learn.
Love y'all: Merry Christmas... and party all night long on new year's eve.

Oh, it's shortly going to be THAT time of the year...

I turned 31 too! Dear oh dear, exactly 10 years since my 21st ;o)

Oh yeah, that goes without saying!

This is a positive outlook on life - lately I've been thinking the opposite - that to every beginning there is an inevitable end. I hate these thoughts that I have but your positive thought will hopefully make me think differently...

Life is a never ending learning experience. Mark's post is an interesting one, but I think I'd spend way too long listing all that I have learnt over the year.

When I was taking consulting contracts through engineering firms, no matter how long they promised the project would last, I added it to my resume the first week, and did a 2500 resume mailing within 30 days... that paid off many many times.
My current gig is going well, primarily because I am planning as I do it how to morph it into something bigger and better and more fun...and gearing up to deliver at that new level.
If you dont do that, stagnation sets in...thats bad, even for the people who think they like the stability... some movement is requisite to life.
> > > learned that I've still a lot of things to learn.
Im 64... and I learn more each day now, than I did when was 30... learning pays off.
There is one downside though... when one is an idiot, other idiots arent irritating. A person has to learn how to reconcile having ones proven insight and understanding refuted by clients or others who judge you based on thier own severe limitations.
One thing has helped me in that regard...that is making the assumption that no matter what they do, how apparently ignorant it is etc..that it is way more than perfectly right, and based on real wisdom.... doing that has allowed me to find wisdom in places I though it didnt exist and new wisdom....
For instance you could say that a wino is coping perfectly with an utterly corrupt US corporate culture.. he is entirely free of it... not dominated or part any rat race... there is some wisdom in everything. Findng that speck of wisdom in some cases provides much greater insights in ones one own life than can be imagined.

I know a lot about recovering from burn out... here are the key elements to what I think works best.
10 hours or more sleep per night. for a few years. Fasting on fresh made raw *vegitable juice buy a juicer of find a juice bar. Get out of the stressful situation or surrounding for good. Have a low cost life style so you can afford to sleep a lot. Develop new and better skills so you can charge more for less work. Eliminate dairy products, and white four products from your life...go lite on coffee.
Eat plenty of fish and other protiens take digestive enzymes if you have any trouble digesting food...try various types until you find what works.

Marvelous idea...at age 64 Ive just hit on my fit into that scene...very nice. Its high end and takes advantage of my diverse range of engineering, graphics, and artists skills.

A large percentage of people don't want to pay for custom art. They want art that is "nice" but it does not have to be custom done just for them. I have started selling art that is "nice" but not custom just for one business and many people seem to like that type of arrangement. So I am shifting over to that business model.
> > >> >> Sell ad space on your site. >> >> Buy ad space on other sites. >> >> Buy ad space on search engines. > > Thats next.
Start off with ads on your own site... then if you generate enough money you can pay for the ads on search engines and other people's sites with the money you make from the ads on your own site.
I have done that, and still make a nice profit from the ads on my site.

 | I learnt:
- Nothing's black and white; people aren't necessarily bad people or good people, rather they have different aspects of personality which causes them to be good or bad people at different times. - Life's too short. - There aren't enough hours in the day. - 'Real' employment sucks... I'm gonna avoid working for anyone else as much as possible in life and run my own business/freelance. - No one will be around forever (RIP John Peel). - Sometimes in life, there is no second chance. Seize the opportunity. - Marcus Aurelius wrote some really wise stuff. - People on the whole are too narrow-minded. That's their problem, not mine :) - Southern Comfort + Coke is much nicer than Jack Daniel's and Coke - You can have a better night out by not being blind drunk by the end of it :-D - Singing, dancing and smiling should be encouraged in public :) Smiling moreso than singing/dancing maybe, but seriously some people should lighten up. - No matter how hard you try, you can't please everyone. And some days, people *will* be awkward. - I'm like a bear; I sleep whenever I feel the need.

A lot.
I learned that attension to detail is very important, that I'm not as good as I want/or need to be, that jobs aren't just out there waiting, that life is a fragile thing, and you should enjoy what you have, that there are a lot of very short sighted 'creative types' out there, that there really IS never enough time to do everything, that I need better time management and that I want more money for what I do!!!

 | Biggest lesson - sometimes it doesnt matter if you do your absolut best effort - it wont be enough anyway. I've lost four big pitches this year :( Even if it could mean that I'm not good enough I know for a fact that atleast two of the pitches were won by companies that have personal relations with the contractor (like family or best friends). That makes the defeat a little better to handle (I'm a very poor loser).
And then a positive ending of this post - there are always new business to land! Just keep on and you will land them!

Let me see...
Bad:
one of my best friends was almost killed in a car accident, leaving him in a coma for a month earlier this week, which left a close friend of his dead.
Another close friend was diagnosed with cancer 3 months ago, and is spending his last few days in a room in a hospice waiting to die.
Two nights ago another friends house burned down. Thankfully everyon got out okay.
I spent 6 months of this year jobless and broke, with lots of promises from clients that never came through.
Good:
I got a really good full time design job with more money than I ever imagined at a company I really like.
I got my artwork stolen by HMV, but in a cool way.
I got a really big contract for a chain of American strip clubs.
I've been hired to do an album cover.

 | - I learned that if there are more than 1 week gaps between two dates with your girlfriend, something is wrong in the relationship. Seven month ago I went through a very painful breakup with my Girlfriend (now ex.) who I truly loved. I am still recovering.
- I learned how to get unstuck from the past, focus on the present and future, avoid destructive mental loops.
- I graduated with my B.Sc. as a Computer Scientist
- Opened my private practice from an actual office with a nice view of ocean, I no longer work from home.
- Found a well paid job 3 weeks ago that I really enjoy. Now I'm working almost 56 - 60 hours a week and loving it.
- Started learning Fashion Illustration 7 month ago. I did 1-3 drawings every single day since then. Now I am good enough that I use them as portfolio pieces.
- Finished reading 8 very thick books on Design, Marketing, and Software Engineering.
- Compromise is needed to become a good team-mate.
- No matter how brilliant your technology is, without marketing you'll sink to the bottom.
- Having good friends and a social network is as necessary as food, water, air, clothes, shelter, coffee and chocolate.
- Lost weight I am one size smaller, now I can fit in my Hugo Boss pants
- Use every chance to spend some time with my family members.

I've learned:
There are people who seek to be asymilated... that is they seek to become employees. or members of one sort of group or another that they can identify with or follow... And there are the oposites. Those who seek freedom, non-asymilation... Either type is willing to pay an almost limitless price in search of that situation.
These two types don't understand each other at all.. they think the other is defective. Its good to understand these issues and ones own predilections in these regards. that way you can make better choices... you will not try to fit one mold when you are of the opposite type.
****
I found that when one door in life closes, that you then have the time to open other doors... and that you never know what lies in those directions until you begin on the path.. then sometimes you discover a whole new way to operate. Opening many doors leads to many opportunities, insights and options..
****
I found that others judge you by thier own standards... if they are vicious in one situation, or with others... no matter how well masked or justified "well I was defending my business" etc... they will tend be that way towards you sooner or later.. its like a dog that bites... the mean streak is not limited...its a characteristic....,
.....and these assume that you will be that way towards them as well, lying etc.. and will act to prevent you from doing them badly....because thats what they expect. These are not trusting people. They put up a great fake front though. Many are fooled.
... When you see any sign of that, even just a trace...you have seen a person who will in the end be vicious with you... maybe even after years of association or marriage, wasting all of those precious years and leaving your heart broken.. not a good thang.
Compromise with such a person allows 'peace' at the cost of the joy in ones own life.
The mistake I made was to assume the person would not be that way with me, when I saw them be that way with another... one pays a high price for such mistakes.
So now I killfile abusive people...on line..and in life...even if they are nice to me at the time...but I see them being abusive or willfully ignorant with others. thats how they identify themselves. they may be nice 98% of the time... but that trace of viciousness will backfire on you if you associate...and that trace of viciousness is also a toxin that precludes life in them to a large extent... what you are seeing is a polished red apple with poison in it.
Its never good in the end.
The abusive... abuse. These types learn slowly, over many decades. And they only learn the hard way, as they decimate or just eviscerate those around them.
Best to let these boogie on alone in that quest long before they take their scaple after you... cut em loose early...and very very graciously...if you do it ungraciously then somehow that sticks you to them.
One must be gracious, kind and understanding when he or she moves on... its crucial. And when you find a person full of life and grace... treasure them always.

 | - Don't do design work for low wages! - Don't make too much phone calls to contact unreliable clients (tipically the ones who want your work almost for free) - Don't care too much for reaching a very unique style in your design works. This approach will dry out your creativity. - Creativity comes from work (in progress). Use more action and less thinking!
cheers

This one is a *winner... very true in all aspects of life and anything you do... the actual doing is what brings out all of the advance...the thinking produces very little by comparison.
I found in doing my new brochures..I created 3 or 4 final versions ...then another one and another one...and the approach is changing radically and the product is now world class.... and in doing my latest engineering sort of graphics job... and looking at options and spin offs say from the plant floor to the CEO's office...mixing some art...wonderful things are shaping up using skills from things Ive done in all sorts of trades and professions over the years. Its always been the doing that has has brought out the best...and letting the project morph as I go...
