I see that Dave has this week off and they are showing repeats. I wonder
if they will have a little tribute at the end of tomorrow nights show. I
will be
surprised if Dave waits a whole week before saying something about it.
I wonder if Leno will mention it tomorrow (new show, not a repeat).

I am somewhat surprised to find myself thinking of Johnny (God be wit'm)
as being somewhat /after/ my time. I remember the early years of the
Carson /Tonight Show/, and the Paar-Carson interregnum, but my core
recollections of NBC latenightery go back to the days of Jack Paar and
Steve Allen.

There is nonetheless an important cultural continuum here. of which
Johnny was a conscious and preeminently skilled continuator. I might
hope that, in the 24th Century, comics will still be making intelligible
allusions to the Fields-Mc Carthy feud, or Jack Benny's response to the
mugger, which will still resonate in their era, just as Gilbert's jests,
or Joe Miller's, or Chaucer's, or Ariistophaes' do in ours.

....I wouldn't be surprised if Leno scraps the whole Monday show for a
rerun of Carson's last show. Bob Wright will almost certainly demand it
personally...Johnny was Dave's patron, so expect something from him as
well...even "Nightline" and Kimmel will do something...

Does NBC even have the rights to Carson's show, despite being shown
on the network ? I think those are (or were) owned by Carson's production
company. Much as SNL reruns are owned by Lorne Michaels company
Broadway Video.

He is the biggest television-related death since Lucille Ball on Apr.
26, 1989; and Jackie Gleason before her on June 24, 1987, and there were
tons of retrospectives on each of those television giants.
I expect no less than the same for Mr. Johnny Carson.
I expect to fill up at least 1 full 6-hr videotape and maybe close to
2 6-hr. tapes before all is said and done on Johnny Carson this next few
days.
Hard to believe there is no memorial service scheduled by the family
for him.
I'm sure some friend of his will sponsor or find some way for his
friends and public to pay its last respects to one of the greatest
television icons of all time.
