Los Angeles Former N-B-C "Tonight Show" host Johnny
Carson died today at his beach-front Malibu home. He was
79
His nephew, Jeff Sotzing, says Carson passed away
"peacefully" this morning "surrounded by his family."
The cause of death is reportedly emphysema.
For three decades Carson charmed late night audiences
with his topical monologues, droll comedy skits and
celebrity banter.
After his emotional sign-off from the "Tonight Show" in
1992, Carson chose to retire completely from the public
eye, refusing involvement in any other show business
ventures.
Nearly all Carson's professional life was spent on
television, beginning with his start on stations in his
native Nebraska in the 1940s. After hosting a number of
game shows and variety programs, he replaced Jack Paar as
host of the "Tonight Show" in 1962.
Sotzing says there will be no memorial service.
Carson often had a cigarette in hand in the early years
of "Tonight." He eventually dropped the on-air habit when
smoking on TV became frowned on, but one former associate
said Carson remained a heavy smoker for some years
afterward.
