Exit big-end bearing:

http://www.carsforums.com/showthread.php?t=3410

I knew a guy who drove 50 kilos in a VK Valiant with trans in second (3
speed auto) by mistake!?. He said he was doing about 80 kph. The
transmission oil boiled out the transmission case vents. He only realised
his error when the oil caught fire on the muffler,...some mothers do have
them.

I thought if anyone was driving a car at 80k's in 2nd gear (unless its a
2spd powerglide) the engine would be shouting its bearings off.:-)

if you just mean 'noisy' then yeah, of course... I've spent plenty of
time flogging around 2nd gear tracks at speeds up to 100ish, in normal
jap sports cars, with 0 worries...

Depends on the tyre size and diff ratio. Most 'base model' V8 fords from
the 70s would actually make it to 100km/h just at or before 5000rpm in
first in an auto, so doing it in 2nd would be a cake walk, relatively.

They did tend to have 2.92 or 2.75 diff ratios (depending on whether it
was the bw or ford diff) and tallish tyres.

No, ford falcon 4.1 3 speed auto can do it easy.

It will do 120km/h in 2nd before you wonder why its stopped accelerating.

Ok, the XD will quite easily pour all its fluid onto the muffler .. when it
overheats it increases pressure in the transmission case, and it pops its
covers and the fluid pisses out.

But 120km/h in 2nd gear is only 5 ,500 rpm or something. The push rods wont
do it any faster - a form for rev limitter.

My old XF S pack was an auto, on the highway I would drop to second to
overtake from 90-100... on a long drive I forgot I was already doing 120...
went to overtake, slammed the stick in 2 and wished for a rev limiter!
Fortunately it held together, but I was a little more careful after that...

Getting a stock 250 ford 6 at 5500 rpm is a head ache itself.

Many years ago a mate had a 70's Holden with a 253. I was driving it one day
(he was pissed) and he claimed it would do 160 in second gear. I said
bullshit. He pulled the T shift to second and I floored it. It did 160kph
indicated. Don't know what the revs were, but I held it WOT at that speed
for about 2 k's and it didn't blow :)

He was an engine rebuilder by trade, but I think the whole car was pretty
stock.

Valiants have a very tall diff ratio, I used to throw the 3 on the tree down
to second at 90kph no problems and hold it out till 110kph on a near stock

I was once accused of a shit tune up. The guy, a courier left the
handbrake on after I parked it with it on. Ignored the red light and
burnt out the trimatic. Still blamed me because he said he never used
the handbrake. Worked for a gov department.

Im always very surprised at just how many people with autos dont use the
handbrake!
Whats the big deal? They cant handle changeing gears OR pulling up a handle?

My 318 easily spun to 6000 rpm more easily than a camry.
Wonder what ever happened to vrooom, nothing revs like a camry?

The box that spat oil out was probably a borg warner, probably through
the filler tube. I had a 727 torqueflite.
