the AV output from a VCR? (without using a computer I mean of course)

cost around 150 - 200 depending where you buy

it will upscale TV to the LCD resolution. Pip display

They include a TV tuner and several different inputs including VGA, so
you can just use the remote to switch between sources

a quick google search showed this retailer selling them (i've seen them
cheaper tho)

funny, that one still shows as a broken link where the txt wraps on my
newsreader (Gravity) is it reader specific ?

doesn't really worry me tho, if i want to look at a wrapped link i can
always recognise them as such and paste both lines into Mozilla

I'd say a lot if you want to build the interface yourself from scratch
(timings etc)

I do know there exist products in the Australian market for around $150 that
allow you to plug in your PC, a VCR and an XBox (for example) into this box
then plug the LCD into the box and you can switch between the different
inputs. All outputing clear images on the LCD.

The quality output of these things tends to be nothing short of discusting.

"Dee" mentioned that some provide PIP for tv/pc display, but the picture
from the pc is seriously degraded. When using an LCD screen, you'll cry.
Not to mention that these don't provide a connection for DVI.

i think a lot depends on the unit, the one i mentioned will upscale TV
resolution to the LCD, some just drop the resolution. A LCD is designed
for a set resolution and changing from this will degrade the picture.
The aver TVbox 9 is about the best for that price, and a lot of us are
using them in our home built projectors with pretty good results, not as
good as watching DVD playback, but acceptable for broadcast TV.

Avermedia have 2 external boxes available.

The AVerTVBOX9 is the analog tuner version
The AVERTV DVB-T-STB3 contains a digital tv tuner and is probably give you a
better picture and is a bit more expensive than the analog version.
