Just email the invites to yourself, then cut and paste the URL's in the emails you receive into a message in the newsgroup.
At least that *used* to work - I'm not so sure it does now, because for the last four I posted that way, *I* got the "welcome to gmail" messages that usually get sent to the person who signs up. That should not have happened.
