 | Telstra Phone Number - pls read
Hi everyone,
For anyone contemplating using the Sensis directory service number, 1234, Sensis, as you may or may not know, is a subsidiary of Telstra.
The 1234 number is replacing the Telstra 12456 directory assistance number, but this time with outrageous costs attached: 40c to call the number, then 4c A SECOND!
With this sort of pricing structure in place, it's no wonder so many Australians hold Telstra in the same regard as the major banks.
By law, Telstra have to provide a FREE directory assistance number, because they are still majority owned by the government. They choose however not to pass this number on to the public.
What's the number? 1223.
Thumbs up to Telstra for finding a way to charge for a service that is supposed to be provided for free.
Of course, feel free to forward this on.

Perhaps you could develop and manage a better national telecommunications network? I heard it's really easy. Let me know when it's up and running,,,,,,,,

It was developed over many years by people much more competent than the current mob, and was running quite well for many years too.
It shouldn't be that hard to *keep* it running.

Keep it running isn't sufficient! There is a massive overall process needed NOW! It's already underway (slowly) and it is costing bulk dollars. This is to drag the infrastructure up to basic DSL compatibility. Hardly sufficient for the VoIP and related services that will be coming our way shortly. How competitive can our industries be in the world when we have such ordinary telephonic services? Oh well, back to the mining and agricultural based economy again..
I half suspect the move to sell Telstra was less about competition or debt repayment and more to do with the big bills coming down the track. I remember one of the problems with Qantas was the big bills needed to keep it competitive. No problems now for the government coffers.
I don't know what country you used to live in but the client services have picked up noticeably from Telstra since the time it was fully publicly owned. The back bone services are the problem due to the legacy structure in place and the difficulty upgrading it (a planning hangover from those "good ol' days"). Surprise surprise, there is no direct competitor to Telstra in back bone services either so call charges are higher than they should be.

I don't really think that the 'General' run of the public that criticise Telstra or the Other carriers (of Telstra's line).Really realise that when they compare our 'Australian' Telephone System (Telstra's Wires)...to the rest of the world they forget that we here are a nation of only some 20 million people...Not 260 Million like the USA(for instance)...and in excess of 50 million in England, etc ...Now take any of the European Countries and compare their 'Land Mass Size' to ours ! then to that 'much reduced' land size...introduce many ,many millions more people to the Country.....Then consider...The wiring that needs to take place to 'reach' their cities etc, etc.... Now look at our Country..The Mass of land that we have and great distances between the cities and Towns...Then re-remember that we have ONLY 20 millions people to help pay for it ....!!!
Obviously we will alway's have a problem; and be behind these other countries..We do not have the 'Population' to 'Pay for it...or to make it 'Pay' !!
The USA has about the same land mass as we have and have over 260 million people to 'Pay for it..or to make it 'Pay'..!!
So why keep winging about 'Telstra' all the time....As 'Mike' say's...Let us 'know' when you have something better to 'offer' !!

Companies incessantly call with "better offers" so tele-service providing must be a winner financially - all based on my phone bill. But more than that, it's the feeling of price fear every time you pick up the mobile for instance, the resentment when it doesn't work 100 yards out of town, and mostly Telstra's being flogged off with that profit going into shareholders' pockets. Maybe it's a case of shooting the messenger (literally) but there is a lot of frustration out there about the fire sale.

But don't forget...jg...They are still using the wiring that is already in place ! and has been for years..(with new wiring happening in Cities only)...No further 'Extension' of the wiring systems though !...These 'competitors' are not 'paying' for 'extensions' to the wiring system....They 'All' hang on Telstra !....Nobody extends the 'wiring' system though ! do they ?.And if Telstra does...They 'Have to recoup' the 'Costs'....Now don't they ??

For the optuses to fall over themselves as they do for my business there must be big potential for them (not for me). I resent them using "my" wires too just as I resent the public owned telstra being flogged off, but I'm not punishing them for that. It just costs a lot to use the phone that's all.

Exactly. Thank you very much. The trains (and public transport as a whole) in Melbourne are far superior to NSW. When the the unions ran the system in the Kane/Kirner years it is was a disaster - strike, strike strike, trams welded to the tracks and so on.
The problem in the UK (as well as England, as it happens) is the track network.

Interesting comparison.... But for anyone who only sees the trains in Sydney from the passenger's perspective you are only getting half, or less, of the full picture about what things have become the way they are.
What the government (via their media-connected spin-doctors) tells the general public is rarely true enough to actually give any credibility to.
>The problem in the UK (as well as England, as it happens) is the track >network.
That's part of the problem, but it is by no means the main factor. That said, if the physical network was structured better, fixing the other problems would have a much more beneficial impact.
