 | I've been considering a new PDA. It came down to the HP HX4700 ($999 at Harris Technology - store up the road) or the Dell X50v ($899 at Dell + delivery). I've contemplating the two all week, and read countless reviews which basically end up at the same conclusion "both impressive... HP bigger screen and better software package included... strong magnesium-alloy casing.... Dell better value... does not have silly touchpad... easier to carry... more grunt... better video processor"
Price difference was negligible by the time I added Dell's $49 delivery charge. So today I decided to bite the bullet and find out who could get me one by the end of the week (impulse buyers demand instant gratification ;-)
HT - one in stock at Parramatta. $999.00 not negotiable. Price already dropped $100 as the new HX4705 is on the way. With the shiny box sitting in front of me, it took a LOT of willpower to walk back to the office to check what Dell would do.
Dell - website said price has dropped to $849 with free delivery. Not bad. But then I had an idea.....
Our little dept at work has 35 Dell workstations. Company-wide there's about 8,000 desktops/servers. This will become about 25,000 by the end of next year.
So, I was a little surprised that we didn't have a L:P for the Dell EPP page (http://www.dell.com.au/epp2). Hel, even IBM still let me pump gear through theirs and they have less than 5% of our company's hardware now.
Anyways...
I got on the phone to Dell Australia. Spoke to someone in Singapore - heh. Explained who I worked for and asked if there was anything they would do in terms of a one-off deal. Within 2mins she was back on the line with an answer.
$699 with free delivery!
I just about fell off my chair. Suddenly the HX4700 looked like a complete ripoff ;-) Needless to say, I placed an order. The friendly sales person said it would be on my desk by Friday. Nice one.
