PRODUCT: DigiGR8 mini digital camera

Thursday, 13th January, 2005

Saw vendor selling miniature digital cameras at Centro Surfers Paradise
(formerly known as Paradise Centre at the Cavill Mall entrance alongside the
escalators to the amusement level) for $39.95. Observed the demonstration
to other customers - he mentioned that these cameras have far better
resolution than in-built phone cameras. Said that this camera also has
web-cam function and that comparable cameras at Harvey Norman retail at
around $170.

I approached vendor at same location. Wanted more information on miniature
digital camera. Asked him "how many megapixels does this camera have?" His
reply was "1 megapixel". Again he mentioned to me that this camera has
better resolution than phone cameras and that it's comparable to web-cams
that Harvey Norman sells for around $170.

Showed me how photos are downloaded to the computer using the supplied USB
cable and software. I asked about the warranty - "six months" I was told.
I decided to buy it. (Note: Only after asking for a receipt was I issued
with one)

Once at home I decided to try the camera out. Took several photos and
downloaded them on to my computer. Compared them to photos that I'd
previously taken using a 0.7 megapixel camera that I already have and saw
that the new photos had considerably less resolution. Searched for the
specifications in the instructions - no mention of resolution. Checked the
box and saw that the resolution is listed as 352 * 288 pixels i.e. 0.1
megapixel (101,400 pixels).

Went back to vendor. Expressed my dissatisfaction that I bought what I was
led to believe was a 1 megapixel camera when in fact it was only 0.1
megapixel. He kept on insisting that the quality of the photos are good to
make prints from. I said "I already have a 0.7 megapixel camera which I'm
not entirely happy with and the only reason I dedided to buy your camera was
because you told me it was 1 megapixel."

His reply was: "There is a new way of calculating image resolution. I can
show you documentation that shows it is in fact 1 megapixel" , "what am I
supposed to say to my boss?"

I told him that there is no way in the world that this is a 1 megapixel
camera.

I started losing my patience with him and mentioned that this case should be
brought to the attention of the Department of Fair Trade or the ACCC.
While giving me a refund, which he claimed came from his pocket, he insulted
me with a comment on *my* ignorance.

I found his behaviour appalling and thought you should be aware of this, so
that something can be done about such rogue traders operating within such
retail complexes. I wonder how many unsuspecting consumers bought the same
product and the fact that he chose to trade at an area frequented by
tourists makes you wonder how many more people were duped into thinking
they were getting a 1 megapixel camera?

Sincerely,

J.M.

Always read what is on the box and don't take the word of a salesperson
about the specifications of a product.
Whilst some salespeople are knowledgeable, many are clueless. In this case
you can't prove whether he misrepresented the product or not, it's only your
word against his.

Regards

Next time don't be so gullible, go down to DSE and check out the cameras and
their specifications. You would have saved $10 if you had bought that
poverty "camera" at DSE.
