We've got both - a 5-head split system and a new Panasonic in-wall unit.
The split systems are quieter and they are easier to fit - a small hole in
the wall vs a bloody big hole. They have to be sighted on an exterior wall
so the drain can vent to the outside. I wouldn't think there was much
difference in efficiency - much depends also on the area you have to cool.

A good vendor will be able to give advice on this, also the Energy Advisory
Centre. We got ours from Camberwell Electrics, which has a good
Melbourne-wide reputation as a top airconditioning vendor.

They also have a rep as being extremely expensive.

These two facts may not be unrelated.
