 | I see the latest version of dvdshrink is 3.2.0.15. I gather that it 'knows' about dual layer 8.5gb format and sets compression accordingly. What are people's real world experiences? With 8.5gb there would be almost no compression (I'm guessing) for a lot of movies, esp if you only want the movie and one soundtrack without all the other stuff.
cheers rb

 | i think you are better off to use dvd decrytor to rip the dvd then use Nero to burn the files uncompressed as i understand 8.5gb is the limit on commercially pressed discs as well but could be wrong.

Don't use Nero just use dvd decrytor to decrypt an disc image file and burn the disc image with dvd decryptor. Nero do not recalculate layer breaking pt for layer change.

You wouldn't need DVD Shrink as you could just put the stuff from the original DVD straight onto the dual layer blank.
Just check and make sure of the size before burning though - shame to waste a dual layer blank when you could use a cheaper single layer one due to the size of some movies. Even reducing a movie down by say 20% would be acceptable enough to then use a single layer blank - you would never tell the difference in quality.

: Even reducing a movie down by say 20% would be : acceptable enough to then use a single layer blank - you would never tell : the difference in quality. : On a 20" portable TV maybe ;-) I never compress more than 90% as the drop in quality is unacceptable on a 3.5m x 1.5m screen. Even at 90% I can still see the quality degrade.
Regardless until DL blank media gets to about A$1.50 there is little point IMHO.

You don't need to use DVD shrink if you are just trying to copy one movie because the source is the same size as the blank.
One advantage of making a copy of a movie is that you can ditch the copyright warnings and menus too if you just want the main feature.
