I'm interested in getting a dvd recorder but there don't seem to be any
available with a hard disk and with the ability to record to DVD
that also receive a digital television signal.

Will machines like these be available in the future and if so should I
wait?

Do you have any idea when this type of recorder will become available?

No idea, i guess that the manufacturers make more money if we have 3,4,5,6
or 7 different components to our system. Hopefully a cheapie company will
make a dvd player/recorder/digital stb/hdd one day, then the bigger
companies will need to make one to compete.

Do what I do, connect the panasonic recorder to the digital set top
box. Comes out crystal clear.

Only problem with that is trying to set up pre-programmed recordings
from digital broadcasts. I have this setup you describe, but have you
ever tried to synchronize the timers on the STB and the DVD recorder???
Hopeless job. Mine is a Strong STB and a Pioneer 310R DVD recorder. So
far I haven't found any way to pre-set the DVD recorder to turn itself
on and record from the digital inputs - you can only program it to
record from the built-in (analog) tuner.

So - I'm also waiting for the perfect box. This will have dual digital
tuners like the Topfield STB, the ability to record from both (2
channels at once), a big HD like the Panasonic with the 500 Gb drive,
and a DVD burner that does all types including +/- and RAM. Throw in a
couple of card slots too (SD and CF) for transferring stills or other
bits, and of course it will be completely Region-free, Macrovision-free,
and have Firewire and USB 2 sockets.

When THAT little baby comes out, I'll be first in line!!

what is so hopeless? so you timer two things, if you can do it on one you
can do it on the other. When i had two vcr's and one foxtel boxe it was the
same deal, you had to timer the two vcr's and the fox box to two different
channels.

You didn't read my post properly, did you? ;) The problem isn't that I
can't set two timers - it's that you can't set the Pioneer to record
from the digital inputs via the timer. It has to be done manually, not
via the timer. The timer will only pre-program to record from the
built-in analog tuner.

None of the recorders I've seen have digital inputs anyway. What's your
one?

They are available now. Panasonic and others make them. Not exactly cheap,
but I guess many of us paid near to a grand for our first VCRs and they were
pretty horrible compared to the HDD/DVD recorders with SD Digital tuners at
just over the AUD$1000 mark.

Look at Dick Smiths (Powerhouse) web site - they put out a catalog in
today's Melbourne Hun with at least one or two of these machines in it.

Also, search for the Wintal HDD recorder. Much cheaper, and has an SD tuner
built in. By the time you are done with this you'll find more powerful boxes
have reduced in price quite a bit.

Thing is, you can buy a DVD recorder for around $400 now. But if you
want one with an $80 hard disk in it, you've gotta pay over $600 more...

Okay, head over here:

http://panasonic.com.au/products/category.cfm?objectID=55

....and show me where Panasonic's DVD recorders with digital tuners are.

you might have to wait till bluray or hddvd. HDTV recordings would fill up a
DVD, even a DL DVD, pretty quickly.

unless you use compression, but then whats the point of HDTV?

Connect a e85 to a digital box. Simple. All up about $1100.

there'll be no point in selling conventional tuners in devices when the
analogue signal stops (when is that, 2006 or something?)... after that,
we'll see much more recorders with inbuilt tuners.

That's the device I'm waiting for - Digital Tuner(s), HD and burner.

Doesn't exist yet AFAIK.

Dual layer standalone recorders must be coming out soon I imagine, or are
there any around already?.

Anyone in the market that can wait may be smart to do so- although blank DL
media prices are a worry...
Supply and demand 'though with the media I suppose, hopefully increased
demand will fuel a price drop..

Buy a cheap DVD recorder without a HDD to get your feet wet then when the
ones that have the features you want come out in the future you can sell the
current and get that. $300 to $400 will get a entry level DVD recorder

I don't think a DVD recorder is really as useful as a HDD recorder, unless
there is an intention to swap disks with friends (depending on
compatibility) or to keep copies of programs for a period of time (depending
on max life of media).

Blanks are cheap, but they are still a cost, and then there is the storage /
disposal issue to consider. RW blanks are a possible better option in this
respect but can be less compatible with other machines (may not be an
issue).

Also, most (but not all) DVD recorders (especially cheaies) have analogue
tuners.

A better option may be to get a HDD recorder - Wintal sell one for under
AUD$400 (I don't have one but saw it reviewed in the HUN a few weeks back).
This has an SD Digital tuner built in.

Sure - you can't swap programs with friends, but the solution is far neater
and more convenient than having to store, label and find DVDs.

If wait you will be waiting forever. New format wars are looming, new features
are being added all the time & the encoder chips are getting better.
Th prices WILL drop big time for HD recorders, (HD's are pretty cheap, as is
the actual DVD disk transport/recorder)

A recorder that will also record CD's and/or mp3's must be one of the most
overlooked functions, hopefully will show up in the next generation of
recorders.
The option I took is to just get a cheapy ($300 Mustek) & just connect it to
my SKY SAT decoder. I wont loose as much money when I upgrade to the next gen
HD recorders with more of the functions I want: such as abity to record to CD
(For mp3, audio cd's, so I can record/replay radio programs etc easily)

Just wondering, how does your Aus digital television compare to SKY
SATALITE (In NZ we get the same SKY SAT as Aus, even some of the Aus Adverts).
Some of the SKY SAT programs have poor encoding of the picture, worse than
'normal' TV with good reception.
