 | Well I really enjoyed this French film about a girl (Audrey Tautou, from Amelie) who is desperate to find her lost fiancé who was reportedly killed during fighting on the Somme (WW1). The director is Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie ; Alien 4 ; Delicatessen) and his directing style is similar to that he used in Amelie. The voice-over was a little annoying at times, but the amazing cinematography and plot more than made up for it. The recreations of WW1 trench warfare and 'no-mans land' are the best I have seen.
The story does become a little bit muddled with too many characters, I think it would get better with a second viewing. I tighter editing process would have made a more enjoyable film. Jodie Foster has a small role and seems to speak very good French (well to my ears anyway). Worth seeing if you are sick of the current Hollywood blockbusters.
4/5
