 | "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" is supposedly a kid's story, but is one of those black tales seemingly prevalent nowadays which are of dubious benefit. Years ago, kids' story books were mainly of a bright and cheerful kind, but presumably children nowadays are more worldly wise and "realistic" from 4-yrs upwards. After all, they probably see the Iraq war on TV. Even so, films such as LS:ASOUE, and even Scooby-Doo, could give young kids nightmares for a week. So parents, exercise judgment! On the other hand, this movie is interesting; a detective story with a macabre background, and weird characters. A story of innocents abroad in a dangerous world, of an avaricious relative, and having to survive by keeping your wits about you. It certainly gives Jim Carrey ample opportunity to exercise his talents, which he does with his usual gusto and flair, as the villainous Count Olaf. The film mixes a Gothic 19th century gloomy scenario with incongruous modern technology; adding SF computer animation. There are also "relative" roles for Billy Connolly and Meryl Street, with brief appearances by Dustin Hoffman. The three children (Violet, Klaus, Sunny) are of endearing nature, and perform well. Sunny is played by twins Kara and Shelby Hoffman. If you like movies in the Tim Burton style ("Sleepy Hollow", "Mars Attacks!", "Batman"),this is for you. Perhaps better leave the kids at home; or only take if 10 years and older. ====================================

Have you ever read any Roald Dahl books? Grims Fairy Tales? Hardly cheerful.
