rural mates (and I do have some) have been very disappointed - and
even moreso by the hype and bullshit, than the lack of services.

services to actual need (and determining that need). I guess it's about =
price
as well, but NEW infrastructure is cheaper than ever].

No, it's control over topicality, exerted by the media and by political
agenda-setting. We discuss (some of) the problems created by our rulers,
but we don't discuss the problem of our rulers and the system they
employ for maintaining their power. That's partly because there're only
two political entities capable of forming government, and both of them
depend on that system.

The result is that most of us (millions of us) either despair of ever
improving matters, or fritter our energies away on bandaid solutions
to casual problems rather than seeking substantive solutions to the
causal problems.

Only some. More than anything else, rural services need connectivity
infrastructures. What cables are in place are inadequate and well past
their use-by dates anyway (I've seen telephone cables so corroded that
they fracture when lifted). But they'll be expensive to replace. It
would be less expensive to put a satellite up, but it's still a big
outlay.

And it won't happen. Telstra isn't about services, it's about profit.
Investing in infrastructure won't provide the fat bottom line to attract
investors.

As with our other alienated national assets, the privateers are living
off the capital our ancestors worked so hard to produce. The hole we're
in is getting deeper all the time.

price trends). A sorry mess for most telcos. For monopolies (which
Telstra is for network), it's a joke. BUT changes are afoot. Including

Mangement terminology. "Key Performance Indicators". Ie, how they can
measure that they are achieving something (the myth), or how they justify
a pay rise or promotion (the reality).

Often is a flawed implementation of "accountability", because they people
who are being measured, are also setting up the measurement process.
[A bit like the Peter Principle, where "incompetence" because a badge
for anyone above a certain level. Václav Havel has written some insightful
articles, and even a play on this].

I haven't read a document on internet and comms Demand (projections
for the future) for rural. It's remiss of me not to have looked around
(I have read demand projections on Electricity, but just not been
in the rural telco services loop).

Comes back to KPIs, and Shareholder Value (ie, dividends and share
price trends). A sorry mess for most telcos. For monopolies (which
Telstra is for network), it's a joke. BUT changes are afoot. Including
