G'day,

Whilst in Dick Smith this arvo I noticed a very budget turntable with
in-built pre-amp:

"Optimus LAB 1100 Turntable"
http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/41e89b080c632c14273fc0a87f9c06ba/Product/View/A1361

I've got a box of old vinyl collecting dust at the moment, and was
wondering if this turntable is likely to be crap, or perhaps adequate
for occasional use. I'm not after audiophile quality sound, just "good
enough for scratchy old vinyl" use. Has anyone got one of these units,
and can offer an opinion?

A lot of people with old vinyl seem to be thinking the same thing, pushing
up the cost of turnables on the online auctions (in NZ anyway)
Used to be you could get a Rega for around $250 or less.
I know of one thats been sitting "under the house" for the last 5 years, just
needs a stylus(the stylus cost is why its still under his house in storage)
One option is to spend the extra money , convert the vinyl to CD the onsell
the TT.

Just pointing out the obvious. Were you both not aware of what you were
saying? How interesting that those statements unconsciously gave away
those inner-most thoughts.

You do know that diamonds are harder than vinyl right? :-)

Seriously though, it's the dirt that is the problem, not the vinyl. You WILL
need to clean them all properly anyway before playing, or why bother at all?

I didn't say you misspelled anything. What I was showing was how the
unconscious mind over-rides (as it were) our superficial thoughts, and
shows what we really are concerned about.

BTW, you might check "misspelt".

Very useful things, slips. Not with a tight skirt, however, I find.

Do yourself a favour, and spare your vinyl until you can play it on
something that doesn't recut the groove so quickly.
You could try looking for a decent S/H TT instead.

Totally agree with you Mr.T.

Some of the best advice I ever got about hi-fi untold years ago was to
purchase a decent turntable and cartridge. I'm glad I took notice of that
advice as most of the vinyl records I purchased from that day onwards are
still in very good condition and playable today.

Can't say the same about the records bought before that and played on the
old record gouger :(

El Bastardo might be best advised to avoid the "Optipuss Lead And Box 1100
Turntable" if he values his record collection.

Cheers,
Alan

I thought this turntable may be dodgy, but I recall that other DS
products sometimes punch above their weight. Worth asking about, even if
I was 95% sure the answer would be negative.

> You could try looking for a decent S/H TT instead.

Only problem is that my old vinyl collection is not really worth (in my
opinion) spending more than about $200 on. And $200 would just cover a
pnono stage such as the NAD PP2, leaving me nowt for a second-hand
turntable :-(

Yes DS does have some very good bargains. Their Chinese 80W amp is one.
The TT works, and you certainly wouldn't get anything else new for $100. But
trust me, you wouldn't want it at any price.

No need to spend the money on the NAD. The phono pre will not damage your
records and can always be upgraded if necessary. I have seen old integrated
amps with perfectly good phono stages on the council clean up! Usually the
output stage is blown.
Alternatively you can use the Tandy phono amp for about $20 I think. Jaycar
also have one for about the same price I think.

Yes unfortunately. A friend asked me to fix his.
I fixed it, but told him to look for a decent S/H one.
He's still looking last I heard.

TT is crap, arm is crap, cartridge is crap.
(The phono pre-amp is the best part, but I didn't test it properly :-)

sorry for the ad that follows, but i agree with mrT and others that getting
a decent s/h turntable is better than that nasty plastic deck.
And mating it with any half-decent stereo amp will sound much better than
that new item.
.... as it turns out, i've a Rotel belt-drive turntable for sale, in immaculate
condition complete with manual, cartridge, stylus. (i bought my neighbour's
barely used Rotel hifi system and am keeping the amp and tapedeck - they've
decided to join the growing tribe of 'grey nomads').
I've advertised the Rotel for $60, and am happy to post a pic,etc - if you're
still interested, you can email me at matroker at yahoo dot com. i may also
have a compact Aiwa amp of similar '80s vintage with decent phono input that
will suit; will have to look in the garage.

buying a decent SH one from Ebay might be the go
Sometimes pretty decent stuff shows up at pawnbrokers etc too. Much
is worth a look :)

record everything to CD - then resell on ebay TT and possibly records
too. Shouldnt cost you much at the end of the day.

I suspect it may be too late to worry about that. Those grooves may be
thoroughly re-cut already and have lots of nice little boulders waiting
in them to knock the top off any cartridge that attempts to push them

Probably, but if you are going to bother playing them at all, why make them
worse. And if you find some that aren't damaged..............?

Yes, they WILL need to be cleaned thoroughly.
