US COPR. VULTURES CREATING YEAR ZERO IN BAGHDAD
(Summary Note on Niaomi Klein's Baghdad Year Zero)

The article "Baghdad Year Zero" is a revelation of how the Corporate
Policy makers of war against Iraq had turn Baghdad into "Year
Zero". In 1970s, the infamous Pol Pot had turn Cambodia into "Year
Zero", causing millions of Cambodians to die and suffer. In much the
same way, current US/UK Occupying authorities are doing to Iraq and
the Iraqi people.

There are three important conclusions from this article:

1. After US/UK had initiated war in Iraq, there was no plan/strategy
at hand by the George Bush Jr. administration on rebuilding of
Iraq. Regarding with post-war Iraq reconstruction, there were two
different approach put forward by the Iraqi exiles. One pragmatic
approach which advocate gradual reform of all Iraqi industry, with
some concession to Oil sector was, rather sadly, ignored. The US
Administrators in stead try to fast-track privatization of all Iraqi
assets. This proved to become the most visible failure of US/UK
invasion of Iraq. [part 1]

2. After US/UK illegal invasion of Iraq, the UN Security Council had
passed resolution 1483 (May 2003), recognising them as the occupying
powers of Iraq. This UN resolution had prevented US/UK Occupiers from
privatizing Iraqi resources and industries. The US/UK must now firstly
transfer the sovereign power to a legitimate Iraqi government before
any business dealing could be done. Now we can understand why US/UK
Occupying powers would have to be keen to implement a successful
general election, which recognised by the United Nations. [part 2]

3. The unexpected factor fronting the US/UK occupiers' desire for the
whole sale of Iraq was the resistence of the Iraqi people. The Iraqi
peoples' resistance seem determined, is widespread and being able to
do major damages to the US/UK occupiers' plans. The action of the
resistance fighters has left no illusion that the 25 million people of
Iraq will not be cowed by any military super powers.

The behavior of US Administrators in post-war Iraq was variously
described by commentators as "free market gold rush" or "seeking
spoils of war" etc. However, this "free market" lawlessness is
no different from the 15&16 Century Pirates looting and pillage.

No. You are absolutely wrong in saying that. There *was* a plan for
post-war reconstruction. In their naivety, the Bush administration
imagined the Iraqis would be overjoyed at Saddam Hussein's removal and
come and join them gladly. Of course many many Iraqis were delighted
with SH's departure, but they did not realise at that time that from
then on it would all be done according to the US formula.

The neocons wanted a tabula rasa in Iraq - a shattered economy that gave
them the opportunity to start entirely afresh with their preferred
model, with nothing that was not sanctioned by themselves - border
controls, taxation, privatisation of all public assets and complete
judicial control. Out of the ashes, phoenix-like, a new Iraq would be
born, with a totally free market economy, based on the huge oil wealth
below its soil. They were certain Iraq could be used as a model for how
a Muslim state could emerge that would espouse all the good western
values.

They succeeded in the first part - to destroy completely the
infrastructure and normal lines of political and economic communication
on which Iraq's former prosperity was based. They replaced it with
nothing that could work, or will work, or be allowed to work. How
criminally stupid!

Practically every time a public utility in Iraq is privatised, a whole
group of employees lose their jobs, and that creates a fresh batch of
aggrieved recruits for the resistance. And that's not counting those who
first do their training with the new Iraqi police force or the new Iraqi
military and then defect. This war will drag on for as long as all of
the policies of the puppet government, and all of the mistakes of the
occupying forces play squarely into the hands of the Islamicist
recruiters.

They had a plan. It was designed by a committee. It has failed and will
fail. Like the Bourbons, the Bush administration has learnt nothing and
forgotten nothing.
