Had a 1 -2 second power brownout and when the power came back up two light
bulbs blew and now my PC freezes up at random intervals. Had 4 quotes to
fix the PC ranging from $410 to $1000. Ergon are non commital which you can
expect I suppose, I am trying to get the PC fixed by Ergon, but my next door
neighbours also experienced the brownout and fortunately they both work for
Ergon so I have a couple of great witnesses.

Do you have a guarantee of supply quality? Get over it and buy a UPS.

Yes we do have a 'guarantee of supply quality' and ERGON have had a few
recent claims concerning this according to one PC tech. I will eventually
'get over it' but in the meantime I can still be pissed that it happened, so
would you especially if ERGON has had numerous complaints from people about
brownout problems and done nothing about them. Looking at prices of UPS's
now.

Well $1000 seems a bit high. Probably just changing the mobo and Ram would do
it. And the PSU I guess. But its probably one component thats doing it. Finding
it can be hard tho.

You need a UPS...So do I ... but I dont have one...

Have replaced RAM no go replaced Mobo no go replaced CPU no go and replaced,
temporarily, PSU no go. According to the PC tech, and I had to pay $60 for
this, "Its stuffed" his exact words.

I think I should have read the last reply before I posted it. I took the
CPU and RAM from the stuffed PC and put them into another working PC no go.

Then, and I do this sort of thing all the time... you're stuffed. One customer
of mine had the power turned off and then on at his house. The resulting spike
caused visible scorch marks on various chips on his motherboard, scsi card and 3
out of 4 scsi drives... but the 4th one was rooted as well. And he hadnt backed
up. Another one had his local transformer catch fire and it blew everything on
and electrical in house. Aircon, TV, 2psus and 2 monitors. However he DID get
the lot replaced by the power company.. so I'd stick with it.

Interesting take Boxer, I read his sig file as indicating contempt for
Latham for being indistinguishable from the Liberals

Pretty much the way you read it, John, with despair more than contempt. But
I agree with the 'feather duster' comment; they're all feather dusters in
the ALP.

What's this "Power Company" of which you speak?

I've been off-grid since Easter. In that time my on-grid neighbours
have had the giddy thrill of about 7 blackouts, while I've had 1 (which
was my own fault, and I fixed by replacing my inverter the next day).
No power spikes or brownouts either.

If it's anything like Energy then if it's caused by them, yes, if
it's caused by an act of goD (usefull scapegoat), no. Billy Connelly made a
good movie about suing goD.

OK but unlike Billy Connelly in the movies we had no lightening in the area
at that time. The closest was up the gulf somewhere, at least 1000k away
probably more. I am not the only one known to the PC tech "that have had a
similar problem in a similar time frame in this area" his words not mine. I
understand that I am not the only one making a claim to ERGON. Just
recently an ERGON customer had the entire wiring and most electrical gear in
her house burnt out and the firebrigade cannot understand why her house
didnt burn down after the 66kV lines somehow came into contact with the
wiring to her house, no one was home at the time, luckily, and it made front
page here. I will make a claim against ERGON ,wont hold my breath waiting
and replace the PC when I can.

something in a KW new is a bit expensive but I found one with out a
decent battery at the Auctions for $135.00 recently and have made repair

A good UPS will compensate for moderate brown outs. The APC ones we use at
work do so. Some cheaper UPS's don't do voltage regulation or only cut down
high voltages without attempting to top up low voltages.

Of course they are limited in what they can do... but the software monitored
ones can automatically shut down the pc if things get that far.

You must apply a different definition to UPS than I do.

That is to shut down the PC before the battery goes flat. Usually 10-15 mins
on PC sized UPSs.

We have a couple of 5KVA UPSs at work with extra batteries. Will supply 15
amps to run our critical systems for about an hour. About $9K each.

If the manufacturer calls it a UPS then I'm not going to argue with them :-)

The PC ones at work will run the dells with LCD screens from 30 mins with
heavy use or up to 60 mins just sitting there.

Certainly for a personal PC. Will get you through all those 5 cycle outings
the local pwer company loves to give me. And keep me going for ten minutes
after all the lights go out. Enough time to do an orderly shutdown. Not much
use if your computer is n and you're not home though.

I leave my computers, and the work computers on 24/7.

Hence the need for an auto shutdown UPS at a minimum.

I'd be inclined to mention that the latest UPS system installed at my work
took about 3 months to install and combined with the backup generators
produces enough power to keep a small city running, but noone else can win
this pissing contest while Martin Taylor is around.

No contest but we installed ours in ten minutes.

Young Marist Brother gets more and more excited as the school team loses
every event in the interschool championships. After it is over he goes to
take a nature break and comes out very red in the face. Old Brother says,
what's the matter? Young Brother says, there was a bunch of boys in there
having a pissing contest to see who could pee highest up the wall. So I hit
the roof. Old Brother, well at least we won something then.

You misunderstood me.
A surge guard is fitted to the fusebox of the house where the power
comes in from the street.
IT will burn out before the house wiring goes up due to an outside power
surge.

Actually, that's technically incorrect. In practical terms,
your $8000 wide flat LCD telly with the double overhead
flurgenhurgers will burn out to save the $85.00 surge
guard.

My 103 cm Samsung LCD has the flurgenhurgens on the sides. And it is now on
special at Hardley Normal for $9,999. I don't know if that includes the
tilting wall bracket.

Unfortunatly the recent disruption in power can be attributed to recent

Had a 1 -2 second power brownout and when the power came back up two light

bulbs blew and now my PC freezes up at random intervals. Had 4 quotes to

fix the PC ranging from $410 to $1000. Ergon are non commital which you
can
expect I suppose, I am trying to get the PC fixed by Ergon, but my next
door
neighbours also experienced the brownout and fortunately they both work
for
Ergon so I have a couple of great witnesses.
