Oh well... so I confused an adjective with the noun... at least it's not a
spelling error!

And it's an adjective with an odd ending. Traditionally the -ness ending is
used to form nouns.

examples: dark to darkness, bitter to bitterness, happy to happiness, thick
to thickness etc.

One of those oddities of the English language... and I must admit one I
hadn't noticed :-)
