NSW Treasurer Michael Egan today said he would resign from the post this week and would quit state parliament within weeks.
"Later this week I will be retiring as treasurer of NSW, minister for state development, leader of the government in the Legislative Council and vice-president of the Executive Council," Mr Egan told reporters.
Mr Egan - the longest serving NSW treasurer since parliamentary democracy was introduced in the state in 1856 - said he would also resign from the Legislative Council, the state's upper house, in the near future.
Mr Egan, 56, who has been NSW Treasurer since the Labor government of Premier Bob Carr was elected in 1995, said 35 years in political life was long enough.
He said he wanted to give his successor time to settle into the treasury position ahead of the 2007 state election.
"After 35 years of political combat, I think it's time for me to retire," Mr Egan told reporters.
"Thirty five years is a long time, and if I didn't take it now, the next opportunity would be in four years.
"I think it's important that my successor have the opportunity to show his or her wares before the next election and have a couple of budgets under his or her belt."

 | You arn't happy are you! If you elect the other side you will complain. It was them, who committed much worse crimes against public transport than the labour party ever did. They will wipe their hands of it by selling it off and pumping taxpayers money into their mates hands like kennett did in Victoria. Do you want that? The mess left behind was left to labour to fix. The opposition is much much worse with PT than the labour party. The greens have no hope of getting in same with Family first one nation are finished the democrats are finished. Ray

Which is exactly what Labor are planning to do.

I lost my job in VLine Freight under a coalition Kennett led government prior to privatisation. I havn't been able to find full time work since. How do you know that labour are going to do the same, they were forced by the howards feds to flog off freight corp with their share of national rail to the enemy corrigan (By denying them federal funding etc) As for driver shortage in vic & nsw, what a load of bullshit. I applied for a trainee driver job several times with city rail and connex melb and havn't heard anything since. Also the head of rail corp that vince graham was once an exec in the former met and vline in Victoria where we got rid of him after the same mess was done here.

What tune is that? All political parties should be outlawed.

Because they're the kings of privitisation and carr is a thieving mongrel

That should tell you something then, cause plenty of others have been employed

We all know what a fuckwit he is, but he's doing exactly as carr wants so he can then sell it to his mates.

All political parties in Australia have moved to the right in the last 20 years.

Ironicly the labor party would do the same thing if it could. I seem to notice that the Victorian ALP is not re-nationalising V/Line, suburban rail and tramways but re-franchising with new contracts either this year or next. So they too, are believers in the idiology.

Remember that Labor governments in Australia closed down all of Australia's tramway systems except Melbourne. Ever heard of Clem Jones (Every working man should be driving their car). In fact city Rail is going down the quasi privatisation route all ready with the PPP for the 450 rolling stock order. Which in laymans terms means the things will be leased. One of the biggest supporters of Private tollways has been in fact the NSW ALP.
