CHRISTIAN CALLING

Answering questions

To Read: Micah 1-3

To Know:

"First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your
faith is proclaimed in all the world." (Rm. 1:8)

At 12:30 AM on a Tuesday in the Fall of the year, Red Sox catcher Carlton
Fisk waved his high fly ball fair and the 6th game of the 1975 World Series
belonged to Boston. Rico Petrocelli bounded out of the dugout to greet Fisk
who himself bounded sideways down the first base line waving and willing his
towering smash away from foul territory. All New England erupted. The
organist in the park played the Hallelujah Chorus. Every college dorm near
Kenmore Square flooded into the streets. Church bells rang throughout the
six state region. It was a baseball miracle.

Rico had been on second base in the 8th with the team trailing the Big Red
Machine from Cincinnati by three runs when journeyman pinch hitter Bernie
Carbo came to the plate. The Red's hurler made his pitch too good and Bernie
deposited it in the centerfield bleachers. Petrocelli crossed home plate
ahead of Carbo sending the game to the 12th before Fisk ended it.

A few years ago I interviewed Rico about his experiences on the field during
that legendary contest. Before we talked baseball he complimented us at
Byfield for our reputation. He said that just as Paul told the Romans that
their "faith (was) proclaimed in all the world," so too Byfield's reputation
for loyalty to Christ is widely known.

To Do:

Paul was not using flattery to ingratiate himself to the Roman Christians.
He was genuinely grateful for the genuine nature of their faith. The world
is watching Christians. We are under the microscope. This is a dark and
dangerous place and to everyone there comes a moment of sober reflection.
Who am I? Where will I be after this life ends? Must I answer to God for
what I did with the life he gave me? Is Jesus really the sinner's only hope?
When these questions come may the Lord use us to give an answer.
