 | You know "guilty pleasure" kind of films, the kind that are really, really bad yet are fun to watch.
Anyone know any SF / Action type films that might be worth a look?
I'll start the list with
"At The Earth's Core"

 | I disagree, that was a masterpiece. It's like saying "The day the earth stood still" was crap. Ann Francis was superb.

That's ok. You can disagree. I've seen it twice now and have cringed both times. And that's from someone who loved Lost In Space way back when. Actually, not only have I cringed, but managed to almost laugh myself sick when watching it.

Did you ever see the pilot for Lost in space?
God that was corny.
I know it was meant to be a kids show but it was just plain silly.
At least Jonathon Harris redeemed himself in "A bug's life".

Actually I said "original pilot", this one wasn't actually aired until a few years ago. In the original one they crashed and abandoned the jupiter 2 as unservicable to travel around in the chariot. I believe the premise was they would have many adventures on the one planet. I recall a line when they where entering the freezing tubes that Judy gave up a career in musical comedy to go with her family. It was later reshot to include the robot and Dr Smith (probably this is how he got the spercial guest in the credits)

Dark City is very good, better than The Matrix with which it shares some thematic elements.

OTOH I think this is just about the most overrated SF film of all time, complete crap IMHO and not even fun.

I prefer "Fear City" (Melanie Griffiths in her younger days).
It doesn't get a good review in movie books, but IMHO good soft .

Body Double if you like MG... and that was good soft as well.
As far as the worst SF film.... Time Lord with Mark Hamill. I couldn't believe the way it was edited...

Brilliant political satire, and a cult classic. Not crap IMO.

A very influentual book, and his is the only movie ever made of it. Production values weren't great, but it stuck pretty close to the book. Again, not crap.
> Dark City
Never seen it, but it certainly looks like it qualifies.

Agreed. Crap film (but with some fairly breathtaking effects for its time). Probably the worst 'droids ever made, and the wimpiest hero in the history of history itself. But a bit of a romp nevertheless.

you have to watch this again, but this time imagine the entire film to be a mental syndrome of the man rather than take what you see literally. imagine that there is no waste land, but that he sees his environment as a wasteland and picture in your mind that the city is perfectly normal. it turns your entire view upside down. there is a real medical problem called "the omega man syndrome".

"Zone Troopers" "Battle Beyond the Stars" and I'm quite surprised nobody has mentioned this one. "Plan Nine from Outer Space" the crappiest movie of all time.

Someone has already mentioned "Plan 9".
But I don't think anyone's yet mentioned "Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe", nor Harry ('Mr Burns') Shearer's first film "Abbott & Costello Go To Mars" :)

Ah. I remember a Bill Young birthday roast at Kirribilli Pub Theatre which featured Turkey Shoot rather heavily. Hosted by Paul Chubb - what a hoot.

I once had a library of Beta tapes, and then one by one all my Beta VCRs went RS. My brother-in-law still had a working Beta, and I gave him all my Beta tapes a year ago. Now his Beta has gone RS.
In the meantime I had to build up a library of Beta tapes, mainly Nelson Eddy, Freddy Astaire, Marx Bros, etc.

May be so.
All I know is that my VHS VCRs have lasted much longer than my Beta VCRs, and I have had less trouble with them, especially with the sound heads. I used to think Beta was superior to VHS, but I was envious that VHS could use longer tapes.
Long before Betas became extinct, I was told in England by a British friend that Betas were on the way out. To think I replied more or less "No way".

 | The movie that was on SBS last week: Guitar Wolf: Wild Zero
Aliens, Zombies, and Rock and Roll heroes.
Whats not to like about a movie that has: - two flesh eating zombies in love, and kissing! - Chants of "rock and roll has no limits" - A straight guy who realises he's in love with a tranny boy because the cool guitar player told him "Nationality and gender are no boundaries to love" - a hero who (after falling 10 stories by being blown out of a room by explosion) stops to retune his guitar while still being shot at. - an insanly mad venue owner who has green explosive laser beams shooting out of his eyes. - Flames shooting out of the exhausts of cars, bikes and microphones.
....and its all in Japanese, with subtitles. :)

That would rule out 99% of "SF" films made these days :) Most being simply action films set in space...

If you mean Carpenter's movie "The Thing" it is based on the story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, written in 1938. "The Thing from Another World" was on the ABC recently.

They were both based on Who Goes There, but the 1982 version was a lot closer to the original story.
"The Thing" is one of my all time favourites... and a wildly stolen from film.

Any of the Godzilla series, particularly the earlier ones.
Watched Mechagodzilla recently and was left baffled by the editing of the fight scenes. Happened all too fast, which doesn't gel with my memories of the other Godzilla movies.

That was fun...... Didn't he go after the female lead in this movie? On second thoughts nearly all the 50s B monsters seemed to go for the lead female

Doesn't count as crap, for several reasons.
First, it was an SF remake of a Shakespeare classic (The Tempest). Since when is Shakespeare crap?
Second, the production values were fairly high for the times.
Third, Robbie the Robot. A truly gorgeous gizmo.
OK, there was a fair bit of ham acting, but that wasn't at all uncommon for the time. And yes, Leslie Neilsen was prominent in the cast, but it was pretty early in his acting career, and before he settled on comedy.
A guilty pleasure? Maybe. Crap? I think not.

It's an excellent movie, and the footage inside the krell machine still evoke a sense of the weird and inhuman. However, I keep waiting for Neilsen to bang his forehead into one of the Krell bulkheads.

Star Wars -- but only because it's been poked to death, and for Puke Groundcrawler's immortal whining line of "but i wanted to get some power converters..."
And yes, I did read your criteria carefully :)
