 | Streptococcus bovis is one of the Group D streptococci. We sign this out as Group D non-enterococcus" in our reports. I believe S. bovis is just one of this group. It is part of gut flora. It is a gram positive coccus, and grows as a gamma or slightly alpha hemolytic strep on sheep blood. It is PYR negative but bile esculin positive and does NOT grow in 6.5% salt solution.
It can be found in wounds and anywhere outside the gut that infection sets in, usually from spillage of gut flora into normally sterile areas. It can cause a particularly virulent endocarditis (see link below).
You can go, like I did, to www.google.com and put in Streptococcus bovis and get 59,000+ hits in about two seconds.
