 | The daily online "news" page of 'Psychology Today' magazine today (Jan 18 '05) re-posted an article by Monique I. Cuvelier from the Jan/Feb 2002 issue trumpeting the Columbia University prayer/fertility study of 2001 -- a study discredited by Bruce Flamm in the Sep 2004 'Skeptical Inquirer' and in 'The Scientific Review of Alternative Medicine.'
As Flamm wrote, "one of the authors of the ... study has left the University and refuses to comment, another now claims he did not even know about the study until six months to a year after its completion and also refuses to comment." The remaining author has now pled guilty to fraud and conspiracy in unrelated matters.
'Psychology Today' currently has little excuse to continue to popularize such absurd, refuted work. The disputes, refutations, withdrawals, and indictments around this story have been publicized in the international media. A retraction and apology by the 'Psychology Today' editors is now warranted.
