 | For those (not me!) who must deal with the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX!) legislation, here's a pointer to what I hope will prove a useful resource:

 | I can't believe I didn't find this in the archives anywhere; perhaps my frustration is impeding my Sherlocking skills.
We just updated to Office 2003. Now, when I attempt to modify the margin of a style, Word just creates a new style with my modification tacked on, like so:
WAS: Body Text ACTION: I slide a block of text over to move the left margin a little to the right. NOW: The style for the block is called "Body Text + Before: 0.26" with a rather exotic symbol after it. The original "Body Text" still exists as an option, but with the original formatting.
I am finding it impossible to just have my regular styles, and modify them as I go. Instead, Word keeps creating new ones, adding on with a plus sign whatever change I made. The styles drop-down list is now such a mess that it's all pointless.
Help & thanks, Amy P.

 | Actually, Word 2002 acts this way, too--if you have not turned off track formatting (Tools|Options|Edit|Keep Track of Formatting). If you have not, and if you display the Styles & Formatting window, you'll see all modifications made to any style.
The thing is, your usual and customary settings for a particular template style have not been changed in the template unless you select the option to make the style change to meet the paragraph in which you have placed the insertion bar. The additionally displayed "styles" are unique to the document in which you're working.
While I have thus far refused to move to Office 2003, I suspect you can hide this obnoxious display by resetting the applicable option.
