Someone said they estimated that our government, in its great wisdom,
has passed 6 million laws to enforce the 10 Commandments.

Well, we do need some basic rules to live by, or everything becomes
chaotic. And we need a few basic rules here on Christnet also to keep
things running smoothly.

I'm not going to add to the 10 commandments -- There's no way I could
improve upon them. But there are a few simple rules we need to observe.
I'll call them the 10 Suggestions.

1. Thou shalt not cross post. Most moderated newsgroups, including
Christnet, frown on cross posting because of the problems and confusion
that results from cross posting. Most cross posted messages will be
rejected.

2. Thou shalt not use vulgar language. One of the big benefits of a
moderated newsgroup is that vulgar and abusive language can be filtered
out. If your command of the English language is so poor that you must
resort to swearing and filthy language to try to get your point across,
please go somewhere else to post your messages.

3. Thou shalt limit long quotes. One recent poster's reply consisted
of a short 5 word sentence, and then quoted 197 lines of previous posts.
Please be reasonable folks. Quote only those portions of previous
posts to which your response applies. No one wants to wade through a
dozen paragraphs of quotes just to read your profound "Amen, brother" at
the end.

Some usenet servers will reject a post if it contains more old quoted
material than new material. This is especially true if the total
message (including quotes) exceeds 100 lines.

Our server also will balk at messages of more than 150 lines of text,
especially if it is written using IE, OE, and MS Word. If your message
exceeds 150 lines, break it up into 2 or more parts and post as separate
messages.

4. Thou shalt not use thy brothers name in vain. If your argument is
so weak that you have to resort to name calling and mud slinging to make
your point, perhaps it's time for you to back off and let the cooler
heads take over. You will never win over an opponent in a discussion by
calling him an idiot, dum dum, a heathen, or___________??(fill in the
blank).

5. Thou shalt not spam.

6. Thou shalt not post in HTML. All posts must be in text only. Any
posts in HTML will be rejected.

7. Thou shalt not hang out thy dirty laundry for the world to see. A
limited number of personal notes to others is OK, but remember that
anything you post on Christnet is posted worldwide for the whole world
to see. If you have personal matter you want to discuss with someone,
it is best to use email to keep it private.

8. Thou shalt observe copyright laws. If you are going to copy someone
elses writings, you must have permission to do so. You may use the
"fair use" exemption to copy a sentence or small excerpt of someone
elses material to make a point, but you should show where you got the
material.

Good sources for copyright information are
http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html and
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/law/copyright/faq/part1/ .

OK, so that's only 8 Suggestions. I'll have to work on the other 2 some
other time.

One great thing about Christnet is that anyone is free to discuss or ask
questions on just about anything that is on their mind and heart. There
are few restrictions. There is only one person that I can recall that I
have dumped off Christnet, because his posts were very anti-semitic and
white supremest propaganda.

And there is nothing wrong with differences of opinion. That is how we
learn -- it strengthens us by making us reexamine our own beliefs,
changing when we see we are wrong, and reinforcing our beliefs when we
see we are right. It's OK to disagree, but please do not be
disagreeable about it.

Just before He was crucified, Jesus told his disciples in JOHN 13:35 "By
this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one
another." I think most of us here on Christnet are Christians. My
desire is that we act like it, and that any visitor passing by can
easily see that we are His disciples.

My worst fear is that a visitor may spend a little time reading what is
going on here, and instead of seeing that we are His disciples, they
instead go away saying "If that's the kind of people Christians are,
then I want no part of their Christ or their religion." We Christians
have the Good News, the only hope of the world. Let's not ruin that by
the way we interact with each other here on Christnet.

Cross post? What exactly is that?
