If it is for your own use, I believe the SD cards are compatible with the
MMC spec (physically) so if you design an MMC compliant device, you
can format / read / write the card. You might not be able to get the SD
specific data, though.

For what it's worth, they all have a documented SPI interface, but
I don't know what that buys you...
