CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Session on Swarm Intelligence
http://www.cs.fit.edu/~rmenezes/icai05/

a special session of

IC-AI 2005
http://www.world-academy-of-science.org/IMCSE2005/ws/ICAI
June 27 - 30, 2005
Monte Carlo Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*IMPORTANT DATES:*

February 3, 2005 : Draft papers due (up to 7 pages)
March 10, 2005 : Notification of acceptance
April 21, 2005 : Camera-Ready papers & Pre-registration
June 27-30, 2005 : IC-AI 2005 International Conference

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*SCOPE OF THE SESSION:*

Swarm Intelligence is becoming an active area of research that focuses
on the study of different self-organizing processes in Nature and using
their principles as an inspirational metaphor to propose novel solutions
to different daunting classical scientific problems. The novelty comes
from the fact that such systems lack one central complex controller, who
normally co-ordinates/schedules different tasks in the system by virtue
of its access to the global system state. On the contrary, swarm systems
have simple entities that have only local knowledge but together they
form an intelligent system. The researchers have applied the techniques
to a large number of difficult optimization problems including traveling
salesman, the quadratic assignment, scheduling, vehicle routing, routing
in telecommunication networks (including ad-hoc networks) and in swarm
robotics.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

* Models of the behavior of social insects or other animal societies
that can stimulate new algorithmic approaches.
* Empirical and theoretical research in Ant Colony Optimization (ACO)
* Swarm robotics
* Emergent Coordination (coordination without coordinators)
* Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)
* Swarm-inspired routing algorithms
* Application of swarm intelligence to real-world problems
* Multiagent Systems (MAS) inspired from swarma behavior
* Security systems based on swarm behavior
* Self-organized applications to Computer Science inspired from
social animals
* Self-organization in business applications

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*SUBMISSION OF PAPERS:*

Prospective authors are invited to submit their draft paper (up to 7
pages) to one of the session co-chairs <#chairs> (addresses below) by
the due date. Electronic submissions are encouraged. Please send file in
PDF or Postscript format. The length of the Camera-Ready papers (if
accepted) will be limited to 7 IEEE style -- use this link
to
access LaTeX and Word styles) pages. Papers must not have been
previously published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. .

The first page of the draft paper should include: title of the paper,
name, affiliation, postal address, E-mail address, telephone number, and
Fax number for each author. The first page should also include the name
of the author who will be presenting the paper (if accepted) and a
maximum of 5 keywords.

Submissions should explicitly state their contribution and their
relevance to the themes of the session. Other criteria for selection
will be originality, significance, correctness, and clarity.

All accepted papers are expected to be presented at the conference.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*EVALUATION PROCESS:*

Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, and
soundness. Each paper will be refereed by at least three researchers in
the topical area. The Camera-Ready papers will be reviewed by one of the
reviewers to ensure expected quality and compliance with the reviewers
comments.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*PUBLICATION:*

The conference proceedings will be published by CSREA Press (ISBN) in
hardcopy. It will be a multi-volume set. The proceedings will be
available at the conference. Some accepted papers will also be
considered for journal publication (soon after the conference). (In
addition to the hardcopy, it is also planned to publish the papers on a
CD.) All conference proceedings published by CSREA Press are considered
for inclusion in major database indexes that are designed to provide
easy access to the current literature of the sciences (database
examples: ISI, Thomson Scientific, IEE INSPEC, DBLP, etc.).

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*JOURNAL SPECIAL ISSUE:*

Best papers will also be considered for publication in a journal special
issue. Details about the journal will be published here as soon as we
finalize the arrangements. The chosen papers will have to be expanded to
a level of a journal and will be re-reviewed.
