 | Hi all,
I am a student doing a science fiar project comparing open source operating systems (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Linux) and proprietary operating systems (Windows XP), through surveys, reviews, research, and, most importantly, benchmarks.
We have decided we would like to gather benchmarks from the following categories to gain sufficient data to make a good conclusion on wether or not open source operating systems are of the same speed and stability of proprietary operating systems. However, if anyone could suggest any additional categories to look into, we would be extremely grateful. Also, if anyone could suggest tests to be run under the 4 main categories that we have not included, that would be extremely appreciated as well.
-Computational speed (time per operation/operations per unit of time) --Numerical sorting --String sorting --Floating point operations --Linear equations --Compression / Decompression --Encryption --Compilation -I/O speed (bandwidth, latency, caching) --CPU --Memory --HD --CD --FDD --PSI/ISA bus -UI speed -Network speed
We are mostly looking now for tests to be run under each of the 4 main categories, new categories that we may have missed, and benchmarks to run the tests. If anyone could suggest any of these, or point us to someone or somewhere that we could gain more information from, that would be extremely helpful.
