The following updates are from the distributedcomputing.info website
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ ). These updates cover public distributed
computing projects (projects in which anyone can participate).

January 3, 2005

- new active Internet project:
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-internet.html#dlv ) Red Library DLV
validates links in ( http://readyresponse.org ) readyresponse.org's
( http://www.red-library.com/ ) Red Library link directory

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-math.html#zetagrid ) ZetaGrid
computed its 1 trillionth non-trivial 0 on December 30

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-math.html#sierpinski ) Seventeen
or Bust found its seventh prime, 28433 * 2^7830457 + 1 (2,357,207 digits),
yesterday. This number is the fourth-largest prime known. Also, version
2.3 of the project client is available for Windows and Linux as of December
24, 2004: this version fixes a critical bug for the Windows client on
non-SSE2 CPUs and is much faster for non-SSE2 CPUs. It also fixes some
minor bugs for Linux and FreeBSD. Users are encouraged to upgrade to 2.3
as soon as possible. An updated 2.3 Linux client with a fix for users with
an old version of glibc is available as of December 30, 2004.

- a new sob.dat file with 10 k is available for
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-math.html#sierpinski ) Seventeen or
Bust's sieving project as of today. Sieving is about 5% faster with this
file.

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-science.html#evolutionathome )
evolution@home posted a progress report on December 20, 2004. After 70
years of CPU time the project has created "the worlds largest database for
Muller's ratchet simulation results." The project owners have completed
work on a more robust project framework, which will allow clients to
download work units and submit results automatically and will provide
better project stats. Also, they have ordered new server hardware, and
the project will move to the new hardware sometime in the next few months.

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/recent.html#lifemapper ) Lifemapper
ended on January 1

- the ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-science.html#setinew ) New
SETI@home project server is down while its database is being updated to
fix a recent slowdown problem. Also, the project is now sending out 4
copies of each work unit and using a quorum size of 3 for validation, to
prevent a bad result from delaying a quorum.

- new ( http://distributedcomputing.info/news.html#050103 ) news article:
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-knowledge.html#wikipedia ) Wikipedia
Criticised by Its Co-founder

- new ( http://distributedcomputing.info/news.html#041229 ) news article: a
short overview of Microsoft's secret 'Bigtop' distributed computing
initiative

- new ( http://distributedcomputing.info/news.html#041229-2 ) news article:
a short introduction to distributed and grid computing
