 | Weirdness: when i do a "mutt " from the shell, expands into something that is not in my alias file.
I've search to see if there is a systemwide alias file, and I can't find it. The systemwide muttrc points to ~/.aliases, and I don't have much in there.
For example, when I do "mutt john", the address expands to something not in my alias file. What's going on here?

Does it happen to expand to something like this? From: Real Name in GECOS field
If so, it's supposed to do that.

wild guess: your alias file isn't source by the muttrc - or it is overridden by another definiton using the same abbreviation. check your setup!

The explanation about the GECOS field being expanded is the correct explanation. And I guess this is the "expected" behavior, though I would like to shut it off.

why is this "correct" when you have an alias by "username"? alias joe Joe Doe

well, if there really is no such alias then what else would you expect mutt to assume other than it being a uid on the localhost? after all, mutt cannot know what the MTA knows, so it cannot tell whether "username" exists or not.
