Can Mutt do automatic address collection (from people I send and CC to)?

What about automatic "as you type" address completion?

I been using GUI mail clients for many years but am still not happy with
any of them. I'm thinking of giving mutt a spin. I used to use elm many
years ago and am still a vim aficionado.

Not automatically, but by typing 'a' in the pager or index, you can
add the address to your alias list.

It depends on where you're typing. If you're at mutt's "To: " or
"Cc: " prompt, you can type the first part of an alias and then type
Tab which will complete the alias if there is only one match or will
otherwise show you a list of the possible matches. If you have a
'query_command' defined, you can type part of a name followed by
Ctrl-T. This will fill in the rest of the name and address if a
unique match is found in your query_command's database, or will show
you a list of possible matches if there is more than one.

Check out the mutt manual sections:

3.2 Defining/Using aliases
4.5 External Address Queries

Both lbdb and abook are popular programs for external address
queries. I think they both include tools for extracting addresses
from the current message into their databases.

Thanks Gary but I knew about these. I have been spoilt by auto-entry and
auto-completion so much that I can't live without them. I don't like the
idea of aliases, that is another namespace which I don't want to
enter/maintain (I've been there with elm as I said - automatic
entry/completion is far superior).

no.

however, i can image that you can abuse
"sendmail" option for a script which
grabs the addresses from your mail..

none. editor and mutt are two different things.
you *can* copy the aliases with a script into
abbreviations for use with your editor, though.

then you are *two* points ahead of newbies. ;-)

Oh well, looks like I will have to go back to Thunderbird then :(

I've been using kmail for 4 months but I am astounded how many times it
crashes and its adoption of such poor usability design choices. I went
to kmail because it at least allows an external editor (although the
invocation implementation is hopeless). I just wonder why nobody has
written an extension for Thunderbird to use an external editor? I want
to use vim for composition. Thunderbird also can't handle maildir format
:(.

Can anybody here recommend any other GUI mail clients? Sorry, I'm asking
here in the mutt newsgroup but you guys are smart so I value your
comments.

dunno. but something like "mozex" would sure be nice.

mozex.mozdev.org

Mozex is an extension which allows the user
to use external programs for these actions:

* view page source
* edit content of textareas (possibly utilizing
a spell-checker in the text editor)
* handle mailto, news, telnet and FTP links
* download files

Mozex works with both Mozilla and Firebird.
Currently only the *NIX and MS Windows
versions of these browsers are supported.

why don't GUIs have use for external tools?
there are far too many one-in-all programs which
try to be killer applications for everything.

sad, isn't it?

wrong newsgroup. see comp.mail.misc
