 | The Mutt manual at /usr/doc/mutt/manual.txt explains the "index" and "pager" but never explains what is the "file browser". Is this an "imap" thing?
Does the "file browser" mean the "index"? If not what?
Thanks, Larry Alkoff

Are you referring the screen that comes up when I issue "c ?" ? I thought that was the index.

Hit c? there you are right in the file browser. It's the thing with which you are browsing files obviously.

you are talking to someone who is using an invalid address - and i'm not so sure about the validity of the name, either. i doubt to them there is anything such as "obvious".. *ehem*

There's no need to flame Sven. _I_ know where I am and my name too.
It's not obvious at all, which is why I have to pin it down so I can continue learning about Mutt in an organized fashion.
The muttmanual talks about the Index - I understand that just fine. It also talks about an IMAP Browser (hence my question about "IMAP thing" ) and a WWW Browser but nowhere does it say or even imply that the "File Browser" is the "Index".
That's something I would expect a "Manual" to define a little more clearly.
So my question, just to make absolutely sure: Does the "File Browser" mean the "Index".
BTW, I like the term File Browser much better than Index.

Index is where you choose your mails file browsers is where you choose your mailbox.
Index:
1 Jan 15 I_Am_A_Spammer (200) Huge c0Xor for fr33 2 Jan 15 I_Am_Your_Friend (100) WHAT exactly is your name? 3 Jan 15 I_Am_Your_Friend (130) `->
Filebrowser:
1 drwxr-xr-x 50 larry larry 5320 Jan 18 17:49 ../ 2 -rw------- 1 larry larry 153532015 Jan 15 10:00 Spam.In 3 -rw------- 1 larry larry 86130 Jan 12 16:12 Sent
I hope this is clear enough. (it took me long enough to type it)

Thank you for your reply Theo. I think I finally "got it".
Apparently I have been thinking of your Filebrowser above as the Index and and your Index above as the Pager.
The Filebrowser shows both mailbox files and directories.
If you press Enter on a subdirectory, you are still in the Browser.
If you press Enter on a mailbox you are in the Index list of email headers.
If you press Enter on a header you are in the Pager which shows the message body with a mini-Index on top.
My confusion comes from the Mutt manual: ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.3. Reading Mail - The Index and Pager
Similar to many other mail clients, there are two modes in which mail is read in Mutt. The first is the index of messages in the mailbox, which is called the ``index'' in Mutt. The second mode is the display of the message contents. This is called the ``pager.'' ---------------------------------------------------------------------
What the manual does not state is that there is a third mode of using the Filebrowser to get to the Index to view the headers and subsequently to the Pager to see the contents.
I'm used to bi-modal programs (like vi) so when the manual says there are two modes that was my starting point.
In fact Mutt's three modes are similiar to a standard 3-pane mail client except that the modes are not all visible at the same time.
Please reply to tell me if this understanding is correct.
Thanks, Larry Alkoff

Yes.

But that is not about reading mail. The File Browser is about selecting a mailbox, which must be done and completed BEFORE any mail reading can happen.

Plus or minus some odd vocabulary, this is correct. Your trouble has stemmed from being over-broad about grouping functions into "modes" of a larger concept. This is exactly why Index and File Browser have different names, to prevent this kind of mistaken association.

And the file browser appears when selecting an attachment, too.

Why should it?

It's pretty clear. There is no statement or implication that the File Browser is the Index.

No.

Aww.... Isn't that sweet... So unfortunate that the two terms don't mean the same thing! Do you like "cheeseburger" better than "shark" as well?

Well, you can eat both of them. It's just that McDonald's don't serve shark.

Are you sure? Some things there taste like squirrel, maybe others taste like shark. Maybe for your convenience they just name it different...
