 | My guess is that the CMOS battery has to be out for some time for a capacitor to discharge enough for the CMOS to clear properly.

Try this (with power off): Short together the connections to the CMOS battery. Computer motherboards often have a place to put on a jumper for doing this in case you added a password into your CMOS settings and forgot the password.
