Is there a way to tell QuarkXPress (version 5.0 here) to store image
locations as relative paths instead of absolute paths?
i.e. "..\High Res\Tiff\image1.tif" rather than "C:\Catalogs\June
04\Summerfest\High Res\Tiff\image1.tif"

Two scenarios to illuminate why this is an issue:

1. Geographically diverse (spread around the USA) design team using a
source control / document management server to store all source files,
images, photos, etc. Unless each person has their work environment set
up with exactly the same directory structure, when they pull down a
project all of the images have to be re-linked.

2. Sending a project off to a printer on CD. When they pull the files
down onto their local systems, which may be a different type (Mac vs.
PC), they have to go in and help Quark re-link the source images.

....or am I totally, completely missing something obvious?

Nope. It's just one of the dumb things about QuarkXPress (and
one of the ways that PageMaker was better).

Thanks for the info. Guess we'll deal with it, and I assume printers
are use to it.

And what's even stupider is that Quark still does not have an "update
all" option in its picture usage dialog.

Even at this date and the cost of that program we have to put a stapler
on the enter key to let it finish updating.

Pathetic.

LOL
I thought I was the ONLY one. I have a piece of tape on it with the words
"Quark Update Tool"

That's always been a big complaint of mine, too. They sorta' fixed this,
though. In Quark 5 and 6 hold the option key when you click Update. All the
images will update without the need for your stapler.

Hope that helps,

Tim

If there are enough pictures that need updating to worry about, I usually
just set the document's preferences to auto-update, save it, close it,
and open it again.

I use Bedia Big Picture. Best extension I ever
bought. It will update all modified images, tell
you the color mode, resolution and and effective
resolution of every image. It will also tell you
what fonts are used in eps's and if they have spot
colors. And a lot more. Great tool.
