We're an independant web printer with an almost exclusive PDF
workflow, still using OS9.1x and Quark 4.1x on a G4 400. While this
works pretty well we only have the 1 Mac and it's tied up alot with
outputting.

So we can't use Pitstop or Quite's software while waiting for output
as we only have the Mac versions of those. Would be nice to RGB Gone,
edit, join PDF files while waiting for the output.

Looks like a G5 won't run OS9.x?

So we could get a "new" G4 with the HD space we'd like and use it for
Quark and keep the present Mac for PDF work using the current
software, or maybe we could get Pitstop and/or QABOT for PC and get a
new PC.

Any ideas/suggestions would be helpful.

I'm mot understanding your problem... Why do you need to run Pitstop or
QABOT under OS 9? Why not Acro 6 or 7 on OS X?

It's Quark 4.1x we need to run, which I understand doesn't run in OS
X? Would be nice if we could just move the dongle in case of a crash.

It'll run in Classic under OS X, but I don't know if your dongle would
be recognised.

It'll run OS9 just fine. It simply won't boot into it, that's all.

I was just down at the Apple dealer looking into the mini....
So are we sure Quark 4.1x will run under OS X.x? How about the
performance in emulation mode? Compared to my current G4 400?
After a quick look on ebay, seems like a used G4 would be in the
$4-500+ Canadian range, the mini is only like $649ish, seems like a
heck of a way to go. We write our .ps files to a seperate file server
anyways so the 5400rpm drive shouldn't be a huge factor.

Yes, it runs. There are some quirks with the display getting screwed
up, but there's an XTension that fixes that problem.

I use a 400 MHz G4, which I consider barely adequate for MacOS/X.
Other people run it on machines like that and seem to think it's
fine.

I think you would notice a distinct performance hit running QXP4 in
Classic as opposed to running native on MacOS9. I sure do, and when I
have substantial work to do in QXP, I reboot into OS9. That's on your
current machine, that is: it would be better with a mini because of
the higher clock speed, etc.

> The mini is only like $649ish, seems like a heck of a way to go.

The minis are pretty nice and have G4s much faster than the 400 MHz
one you have now. But I have never seen a G4 that ran MacOS/X what I
would call acceptably: it benefits A LOT from a G5. YMMV -- you'd
have to try it and see for yourself.
