 | Sorry if this is a repost, but I thought I found another problem, but not so.
I have Zone Alarm Pro (v5.1) installed on this Win XP Pro SP2 computer for a year. Recently I started getting the renewal nag screen, which I don't want to do yet. All of a sudden Zone Alarm is blocking access to my mail server and making it impossible for me to send or receive mail. The message I get is "connection to SMTP server has failed." I have never used the e-mail function and it is turned off. This just started about the time the nag screen started.
I know it is Zone Alarm causing the problem, because when I turn it off, I can send and receive e-mail. When I restart it, the server is blocked. It does not block web or news access (this may not be completely true).
Any one have any experience with the nag screen or blocking of the SMTP server? I realize I can turn it off, but I will not be a happy camper if Zone Labs built this into the software on purpose to get people to renew.
Thanks, Clark ZA Pro version 5.1

ZAP does not block anything just because your update subscription has expired. You are still allowed to use ZAP as long as you like, you just don't get updates.
You may have a problem with a corrupted rules database (earlier version of ZAP were susceptible to that problem). You can resolve the problem by deleting the database and letting ZAP recreate it, go to the Overview/Preferences tab and uncheck the 'Load ZAP at startup' option then reboot your system so it starts without ZAP. When you've rebooted you should delete all the files in the \Internet Logs directory (it's under \Windows), keep any of the *.txt log files you may want. Next, start ZAP and authorise your programs again (don't forget to check the 'Load ZAP at startup' option) and I'm afraid you'll have to do all your programs authorisatrions manually as that version, IIRC< doesn't have the 'learn' function.
My recommendation would be to get the most recent version of ZAP and update your subscription.

 | I didn't think it was supposed to block anything also, but I did not see why it was. The reason I recalled the first post was because I saw something with Norton (e-mail checker) that looked funny, so I should have looked harder. It seems the common client for Norton was set to "ask". I don't remember doing that, but setting it to "allow" seems to restored the access.

No, but assuming no-one is going to persuade you that a less complex system is a better idea then I suggest looking at the logs to see what, if anything, it is logging when the problem occurs. I think ZA has two logs, one for programs and one for other things, but I haven't used it recently. What do the logs say when you try to send and receive email? You may wish to clear existing log entries first so that you can be sure to get only relevant logs. Perhaps you could post what it is logging.
