A pattern is a model or a set of rules which can be used to make or to
generate things or parts of a thing, Looking at patterns in nature and
in organisations is often the first clue to understanding the
processes that drive an observation.

An appropriate model is then built based on these recognised patterns.
It is important to relate this model to an understanding of the
processes involved. If the output can be shown to track the
observations available, we can claim to have an explanation for the
observations. This is similar to a scientific hypothesis and its
subsequent test.

I have just added a new article on modeling patterns to the Caricature
site. It looks at some typical patterns and how to model them. The
