 | I just installed NaturallySpeaking 8, and now when I launch Excel 97, Excel tries to load dgnexcel.dll as an Excel workbook, which of course causes Excel to complain. I found the file at \NaturallySpeaking8\Program\dgnexcel.dll. Anyone know how I can disable that?
ScanSoft's Knowledge Base has nothing, and they have no Community for NaturallySpeaking!

The method Dragon NaturallySpeaking uses to interface to Microsoft office products is to install .DLL runtimes. For Microsoft Word this is a template named dgnword.dll.
You have a 2005 version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Your eight-year-old version of Microsoft Excel has gone through many changes in those eight years and it's understandable why the new program does not work with the older program. There are two solutions, upgrade to Office 2003, or disable the DLL runtime.

 | The closest thing I found to a ScanSoft-sanctioned public forum is a site within the old LHSL domain: http://support.lhsl.com/databases/dragon/webdisc.nsf/. Good luck finding that using links on ScanSoft's site!
Here's one related comment: "Scansoft claims that they no longer support Word97. The only fix I know is to upgrade to a newer version of Word. Ain't that swell?" In my case, I'd simply like to turn off NaturallySpeaking within Excel. DragonPad works fine for me.
Here's another comment from that thread: "People have had trouble with using v.8 with Win98 and Word97. Scansoft has a history of being tone deaf to customers. You just get used to it and become part of the DNS community." Lovely.
Does anyone know how to disable that DLL (dgnexcel.dll) so it isn't used by Excel?

I usually rename it to xxx.ddl t0 disable a dynamic link library that is causing trouble.

 | Hi,
It is possible that Excel 97 does not work with version 8. Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 does not officially support MS Office 97 any longer.

 | Sounds like, for now, I'll need to disable the DLL runtime. Anyone know how? I searched through the projects running in Excel (using the VBA macro editor), and found dgnexcel.dll, but could find no way to delete it. Actually, it's probably too late at that point. Is this something that can be turned off within NaturallySpeaking, before even trying to run Excel? I vaguely recall in older versions there being a place to disable Word and Excel support, but can't find anything like that now.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

"As a workbook" -- what do you mean by that?
Have you tried renaming the file while running Excel?

Perhaps they assume that this Usenet forum is sufficient.

 | That's a possibility. I just figure there's got to be a more standard way of disabling a misbehaving DLL... I don't know enough about Excel and VBA as to how to do that.
There should be a way in NS to disable Word and Excel support, but I can't find anything like that in the installation process (after choosing 'Custom' install) nor in the Options after installation. I could swear NS 5 had some checkbox in Options to turn off Word and Excel support, but perhaps I'm mistaking that with "Natural Commands". The manual has nothing on it. :(

 | Excel appears to try to load dgnexcel.dll as if it were an Excel workbook, i.e., dgnexcel.xls, because it complains that it's not in the right format, and could be a corrupted Excel file.
I doubt I could rename dgnexcel.dll while running Excel, as it is likely locked by Excel. But I could and will try renaming it before running Excel. One thing I don't understand is how NaturallySpeaking is forcing Excel to see dgnexcel.dll. I searched the entire partition and Registry, and \NaturallySpeaking8\Program\dgnexcel.dll was the only instance found.
Anyone have ideas as to how NaturallySpeaking is forcing Excel to see dgnexcel.dll? I could then try disabling that. (I have no need to use NaturallySpeaking within Excel. DragonPad is fine for me.)
As for the lack of their online Community for NaturallySpeaking, it just seems odd to me that they'd have other products, but not one of their major ones.

Regularly seeing comments such as this,
I hesitate to to spend money on their ( possibly ) poorly supported product.
