Yeah right- in your fantasy world. No doubt developers would still be

I actually have that Blue Cheer album in the cover in mint condition
and autographed by all the band members at their reunion concert
at Wolfgangs Club in San Francisco -- many years ago.

I gave the band several hash
oil soaked joints and they smoked out on them before coming on.
They knew me as Doctor Tom and dedicated their first song - Dr. Please'
to me.

I think I'll go get the album cover and lick on it for a while.
SERIOUSLY!

Get off the weed Turdbag.

Go back to your usual sector-editing and theft of other people's work

Why the hell are you shafting the African's with your mindless pirated
cesspit called apple2.org.za ? can't you just FOAD and stop sucking
the last bit of blood left in the Apple // world ? Obviously not,
since the meds you're on are not working - must be the weed that's
tripping you out eh - old he of the fake PhD.

You alone have destroyed the Apple // community and any incentive for
developers to continue supporting it. I hope you rot in the sewer

And is it still Charles or is it Turdbag Dorktor Roberts ? Might want

Thank you to the csa2 gnome who brought this to my attention.

I'm not sure who's been trying to impersonate me recently, but the post
below by Richard Bennett certainly isn't me. If you're going to abuse ol'
turdbag, at least use your real name OK?

For starters, that's no longer my name... The last time I posted in this
most prestigious and historic forum was about 5 years ago, and I'd assumed
that the NTTP RFC was now on display in a museum somewhere, locked inside
a glass cabinet, with brown stain splatter marks around the base.

Like, Usenet? Get outa here, I seriously didn't realise this shite hole
was still operational.

Although I am surprised old turdbag's still alive. I thought he'd died a
few years back, of complications with his perennial ring infection. But I
guess it is that time of year...

So yeah, anyone posting under Richard Bennett isn't me. Although I'm
assuming the usual suspects have already tried me and found me guilty. No
matter, 'twould be expected...

Ah- well then, you should be able to listen to those mp3's and pick out
the dropouts. I ripped them with a freeware pc program called MP3
Direct Cut, which has a graphical display of the music. It was evident
that this tape had a lot of dropouts- places where the amplitude would
very briefly drop to zero. In the old days, cassettes for computer data
would be certified to be free of those.

I found that I couldn't hear those dropouts, even with the visual
feedback of exactly when they occurred.

While I appreciate the effort, I have to wonder - why even bother with
128k MP3s? They should be at least 192, and preferably 256k.

Since they were sampled from tape, why bother going over 128? Isn't CD
quality for most people at around 160? This isn't a troll, I'm just curious
why you feel they should have been sampled higher - I am not an audio
engineer.

Ah, OK. Sorry, I came in late. 128k is probably good enough for
cassette tape - especially commercial, pre-recorded tapes.

However, I have cassette tapes that I have recorded myself on a high
quality deck using DBX noise reduction that certainly sound better than
this, and would benefit from higher bit rates. 192k is the minimum I
use. I normally use 256k if it's CBR, or around 192k for VBR.

_most_ people can't tell the diff between CD and 128K... my hearing's
not quite 20-20* but I'm one of the unfortunate few who can actually
hear a substantial difference between CD and even high quality mp3s...
(and I'm 37 and have played in some rather loud rock bands!) To me, 128K
sounds very close to a commercially duped tape; 192K sounds like a good
homemade tape and 256K sounds close, but not quite CD quality. That
being said, I regularly encode my sample mp3s at 48K just to keep the
files small, which sounds very much like good shortwave reception.

It's a simple enough process, Tom... Oh, I mean for most PhDless folks.
I suppose the more PhD's you have, the more difficult the task would
be, which is why you always have to have someone else do this kind of
thing for you. ;)

I suppose. If you have a dozen megabytes free on a hard drive. I'd
consider it to be a waste of space. But then I consider you to be a

Exactly. I use 192K for CD's (according to what experts have written,
more is overkill) but with cassettes you'd just get hi fi hiss. No
point. File size was an issue, too, since I don't have a high-bandwidth
connection. It would have taken twice as long to upload at 256K.

The acid test- is there anyone who'd put money on their ability to
distinguish these songs ripped at 128K and 256K? All eight, listen to
both versions, and consistently distinguish the 128K from the 256K?
I know I couldn't do it. I doubt if many people could either.

From what I know about me, I suspect that the median age of
