 | We sold our Apple ][e at a garage sale 10 years ago. But I kept our diskettes. And now I'd like to find a way to transfer our files to my XP machine.
Specifically, we made an animation in Basic. I have read some posts about ASCII and modems. Can anyone point me to an article that gives a step-by-step guide. If I buy 2e diskette drive from eBay, can I plug that to the serial port on my XP machine? Or can I put those old 2e diskettes into my old 5" diskette drive on my Windows 3x machine assuming my PC is running one of these Apple emulators?
Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times. I'm just a guy looking for a nostalgia. (It was either this, or trying on my old "Be tough like me, Mr. T t-shirt.)

How many disks are we talking about. If there are not too awfully many I can convert them to usable images for an A2 emulator for you. All I need is postage back to you and small amount for my time. Let me know.

 | Thanks for the reply, Paul.
I have read that it is pretty straighforward to transfer text files. But what about an animation done in Basic? Assuming I get the Basic animation copied from my disk and into my XP, would my Basic file run with one of the emulators in a Windows?

Hi,
Once you've got the disk transferred over to an XP machine, likely it will be in "DSK" image format. DSK images will work perfectly with almost any of the emulators you can get nowadays.
I have a bunch of old animations (in Applesoft as well) that I did back in the day too. From 1982-1988. Let me know if you'd like a DSK image of them! :)
Later, Craig

What I do is this: I have Windows 2000 Pro on my PC, and my Apple connected with a null modem cable, I bootstrapped ADT on the Apple and used it to transfer the whole disk over to the PC. The disk image is now already in the perfect format for the majority of emulators.

 | GarberStreet,
I appreciate the offer and I'd be happy to pay for your time. I have to check at my parents place and see where I left the diskettes. But I think I have about four diskettes.
I must say that I am a bit worried you might be offering your services in a sly attept to gain access to my 4th grade book report on dinosaurs, but I guess that's a chance I'm going to have to take! :)
I will be in touch. Thanks everyone else too for your replies. Much appreciated.

Well, I do not have kids that small now, but, there are a few neighbors that do, and they may very well need a book report on dinosaurs that they can use. :o) Let me know when you have the disks and I'll be happy to convert them to DSK images for you.

Your best bet is to send the disks to someone here and have them transfer the files and email them to you.
There are no solutions that don't require other hardware than what you have. As a practical matter you need an Apple II or an old Mac with a IIe card and a 5 1/4" Apple II floppy drive. -Paul

Heh heh... if you read his original post he says:
"If I buy 2e diskette drive from eBay, can I plug that to the serial port on my XP machine?"
So he is willing to buy some hardware to do the job. An Apple IIc would work, just connect the video to a TV...
However, your offer is his best bet, unless we can get him hooked on Apple II's again. ;-)) -Paul

I can give him a IIc for next to nothing, and he can have at it. Connected to his TV or VCR, he is good to go. :o)
