Hi all,

How common is it for an Apple IIGS serial port to be dead? I tried
hooking up a null cable assembly to a PC, and no matter what settings I
tried (and I did ensure that settings lined up correctly betwen PC and
GS), I couldn't get the machines to communicate. I'm using a WinXP PC
with HyperTerminal.

For what it's worth, I'm blaming the cable assembly at this point. I
purchased the following cables and hooked them up together:

Apple serial adapter, with 8-DIN male and DB-9 female connectors
gender changer, with DB-9 male connectors, and
null modem cable, with DB-9 female connectors.

I tried omitting the gender changed and null modem cable and things
still didn't work.
Any ideas?

Sorry I left out some of the details. I'm using HyperTerminal on the
Win95 side, and the COM1 serial port. I tried different baud settings
(300, 1200, 2400, and 9600) on both the GS control panel and
HyperTerminal, and they all failed. On the GS, I don't have any comm
programs available, but I tried both PR#2 in BASIC to send characters
to the PC and IN#2 to receive characters. Neither command worked. I
tried both the printer and modem ports. Nada.

Some of the 8-din to DB25 and DB9 are printer cables.
You need to be sure you have a modem cable. Also,
some of them are already null-modem. Try removing the
null adapter from the assembly.

Thanks.

I'm going to return the cables that I bought and replace them with a
real Apple modem cable and the proper null modem cable, and see if they
work.

Your info is incomplete. You didn't mention if the ports were set in
control panel or on "your card". Also, you haven't said which comm
program you are using on the Apple IIgs. There are quite a few variables
missing here.

It's not common for them to be dead, especially both of them.
You should read over the telecom faq. Find it here:

It is a little complicated to get it all working, but you'll have a lot
better luck sitting down with instructions from the faq.
