 | A JEWISH human rights organisation has called for the vandalised statue of IRA leader Sean Russell to be left unrestored in a Dublin park as a symbol of Ireland's "shame" for staying neutral in World War Two.
Russell spent some time in Germany during the war, acting as an adviser to the Hitler regime. His supporters ... say he was pro-German only because that country was at war with Britain.
Trained in sabotage techniques near Berlin, Russell's mission at the time of his death was to foster a coup in Ireland and to attack British military installations in the North.
His statue in Fairview Park was recently left headless and responsibility was claimed by an youths claiming to be anti-fascists.
The Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Paris has called for it to be left unrestored as an enduring symbol of Ireland's "shame."
Shimon Samuels, director for international affairs at thecentre, the world's largest Jewish human rights organisation, said: "It's a blot on the history of Ireland, but blots have to see the public light... We're not iconoclasts but I think the destruction of something like this has a meaning, and we would ask for it to be left there as a lesson of what Irish neutrality was all about."
The Irish National Graves Association (INGA), which takes care of the memorials of republicans across the country, said it had received many letters of outrage and donations over the desecration.
Matt Doyle, secretary of the INGA, said the association was working to repair or replace the badly damaged memorial with the support of the family.
“The family were obviously upset. Russell was buried at sea so there is no grave, so this gave some solace to the family,” Mr Doyle said.
Nuremburg War Crimes Trial witness Erwin Lahousen, who had been the key figure in an aborted pre-war plot to assassinate Hitler, said Russell completely disagreed with Nazi philosophy and had blasted their attempts to convert him.
Mr Lahousen said the republican leader wanted help to achieve independence but stressed there must be no strings attached.

An act of cynical and amoral indifference that has and will continue to cast a shadow over our people for many decades to come.
We should at least make some attempt to atone for this appalling act by erecting some kind of monument and also start taking part in the annual celebration of the courageous Irishmen that defied this pitiful cynicism to fight against the same Nazis that the Irish Government sympathised with.

 | (Nasty top post ahoy)
Ireland's shame my hole! The Irish of today should feel no more shame over the nefarious activities of that tosser than modern Germans should feel over the crimes of the Nazi's circa 1945. This is just utter utter irrational horseshit. It is illogical and impossible to ask one person to feel shame for the immoral actions of another. To quote Roy Keane - they can stick it up their bollox!
You could make a better case that they should be ashamed for the criminal acts of Israel, or the nefarious activities of French troops still stationed in parts of Africa - at least that is happening today. But I wouldn't even make that case - it is still horshit. One person should *never* be asked to feel shame over the actions of another - be they the same nationality, religion or even a blood relation. I reckon Bertie should publically tell them to fuck off.

Well, you know Bertie... he's more likely to apologise to them and blame Sinn Fein (as usual).
But you are right when you say "One person should never be asked to feel shame over the actions of another". After all, who in this day and age would ask the Jews to feel shame over the crucifixion?
I really wish Bertie Ahern would have some backbone and tell the blockheads at the "Simon Wiesenthal Centre" to go fuck themselves. I looked up Wiesenthal.com and was disgusted at the politically-motivated headlines on their website. (Below) In particular, they defend Israel actions in occupied Palestine and condemn the UN and EU countries for criticising Israel.
After doing some reading up on it I have concluded that it is essentially a Zionist organisation that flouts the holocaust for its own political reasons, but under the guise of promoting tolerance.

Indeed. What about the numbers of Irish troops killed either by the Israeli forces in Lebanon or Israeli-backed forces ?
See here for an example: http://historical-debates.oireachtas.ie/D/0390/D.0390.198905230018.html
Reference to the 45 who died in Lebanon: http://www.military.ie/pr/07-07-2001.htm
Strange no-one ever targets Sweden for being Neutral...but then again Sweden is a big customer of Israeli armaments manufacturers - see

I don't think we have anything to apologise for. Ireland was young and had been born out of a vicious cycle of violence and had little-or-no appetite for more. To many people the country allying itself with its former invader would have been distinctly unpalatable (to say the least).
