Dick Smith had a universal replacement for about $20.00
They have a web site and deliver.
Why does it have to be an original?

Most of the cheap universal remotes don't have all the buttons of the
original but they seem to be getting better.

You can find some with teletext and I recently picked one up from DSE
which had the menu buttons for my Phillips TV. Now I can finally do
more than change channels, sound, teletext (e.g. adjust brightness,
tune the tv, etc...). There's still a few buttons missing (customer
setting keys) but I'm happy.

http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/en/product/G4612

(I paid $20 for it on special). They have higher end models as well.

I would still pay a bit more for an original Phillips remote.

Once you have tuned the new remote, can you still use the old remote
(provided it still has some buttons working)?

Yes.
Tried to fix your old one yet?
I have fixed my old beer spilled remotes by dissasembly and cleaning the
contacts between the rubber pad and the circuit board with Isopropyl
alcohol.

I just unscrewed the two screws at the back of the remote, but, the backing
does to wish to come away. Is the backing plate a snug fit, and as a result
does not come away easily. I am reluctant to use excessive force
unnecessarily.

Give me a pointer, will I need to prise it apart with a firm hand?

There will be some clips in it that hold it closed that are not immediatly
obvious until you have broken or scratched it opening it up. Get something non
metalic to push in the gap between the 2 halves as you work it along like a
popsicle stick etc so as to not scracth it. Generally once one side is released,
the whole lot will come away, but all bets are off with these things really.

The other option is to just flood it with isopropyl alcohol (batteries out) and
then allow it a few days to try, but this may not get right in under the buttons.
