 | Hi
I've heard about a DVD that lets you set up LCD/Plasma/Projectors with the correct settings for contrast/brightness etc.
Does anyone have this and would be willing to loan it out? Or can anyone provide a source for this title?

I went thru that process on my TV here, but I wasnt happy with the results at all, the picture ended up way too dull and washed out for my liking, yeah, it was more "realistic" but not to my liking.

www.gumboot.co.nz sell "digital video essentials" http://www.gumboot.co.nz/Product.asp?p=1&i=8983
however, DVE is not all that friendly, in that it doesn't really tell you what to do, just gives you test patterns - or so I heard.
An alternative is AVIA http://www.dvdshop.co.nz/shop/product.aspx?asin=630551982X which apparently has better explanations
Perhaps you could use http://www.dvdshop.co.nz/shop/product.aspx?asin=B0000CGECF which is simpler and cheaper apparently... -- aaronl at consultant dot com For every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert. - Arthur C. Clarke

Thanks for that...
Apparently AVIA is only NTSC, while DVE is available in PAL. The difference between the two is apparent, but I'm running a TW10H projector through Component and Progressive for both NTSC and PAL.
Since the TW10H has several memory settings for different setups, I'm starting to think I'll need both versions of DVE to set up for either system. Ho hum, nothing's simple. Do other HT enthusiasts agree?

Tell you in a few days when I get my Panasonic AE700 :)
I certainly looked for ages deciding on a receiver.
Was lucky with speakers, had a good salesman - Savells Sound Centre, since closed :( - who picked out some Infinity speakers that suited me at a decent price.

I got it. The thing is pretty darn simple to connect and gives a pretty good picture out of the box. Mind you I'm only using composite initially). It has an HDMI connector but right now I don't know of any HDMI DVD players in NZ, so you have to buy and extravagantly expensive DVI-HDMI converter cable (something like $700 :)
The Harvey Norman sales dude said that Panasonic are bringing out some HDMI DVD players soon, sounds like the ticket (though I'd prefer Pioneer)

Panasonic would have to be pleased with the way Harvey Norman play the Pansonic demo ads on the plasma TVs. Not only was the Panasonic demo being played on 2 new Panasonic TV, it was also being played on 2 SONY TVs as well. Worse thing was that the Panasonic demo looked a damn sight better on the 2 SONY TVs than it did on the 2 Panasonic TVs.

hdmi offers nothign over dvi, except that it has had marketing-speak added to it and support for transfering 8 channel decoded audio over it.
and the cables are not $700 - http://www.computercablestore.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=484&trkroi_campaign=C152B492-4258-EE9F-C11F-6C21E8FF4822

Neverthless, you need a converter, even if it is just wiring.

I know there are plenty of cheaper cables, but that was HN's official effort :/
Also, finding something available in NZ is a different matter.
