 | Righto - im relatively new to cars - my first car infact. Its a Mitsibishi Galant Viento 1994 (V6 - 1.8L - Automatic).
I was driving along on Saturday night when it felt as if the car slipped outta gear as such (I know its an Auto - but you get me drift). Popped it back into park, then back down to Drive and she drove aight. But its been doing it more recently again (i.e on the way to work on Monday morning). It appears it just starts up now and again - its kinda troubling driving along when it decides to just not do anything when you put your foot on the accelerator.
Now - the question - is this something to do with a Torque Converter or something else (as I said it still works at times) - and yer - basically so I can have me panic attack before I arrive at the mechanics - are there any mechanically minded people who would have an idea of the problem / and cost :-P
Cheers guys :-)

Automatic Mitsubishi losing drive - most common problem is that they drop the overdrive clutch pack. If you turn overdrive off the problem shouldn't occur, when you turn overdrive back on and are travelling at 80+kph it will probably find a big "neutral" when it changes into overdrive. If this is the problem (and it's *very* likely) you're probably up for a repair cost that will be the thick end of $2000.

Mitsubishi had problems in the Galant/Legnum with thermal breakdown of the auto transmission fluid, and it was changed to a different type. The usual cure is to get a transmission flush and new fluid, but using the Mitsubishi stuff, not a generic replacement, and a change change of the filter. You might find that the problem still occurs for a while, because the faulty fluid will have glazed the torque converter, but the problem wil decrease over time.

 | When it happened to me it was $1800. I'd take it in for a service ASAP and hopefully it wont be at the $1800 point.

Do the simplest check first, and check the transmission fluid level. You should check the fluid level with the transmission warmed up (after about 15 minutes of driving) and parked on a level surface. Check it with the engine running and the transmission in park.

Hi Mike,
Sorry I don't have any superhelpful advice, but the best bet to get the prob fixed will be a specialist trasmission garage, ( they should be able to pin point the problems with the description and give an estimate). Of failing that a mitsubishi dealer garage, while they might look expensive the most likely will have seen a similar prob or have heard of one like it and know where to start and have a good idea on cost. Most auto's do need serviced at some time, Sorry if these suggestions sound basic but you should be able to get a feel on price and severity of whats wrong , with the right people.
Now - the question - is this something to do with a Torque Converter ? More likely to be the bands slipping, or the oil being low or overheating, My 2c (ps not a mechanic)

I would recommend servicing your automatic every 20,000kms by a transmission specialist. A simple fluid change and test drive can save a lot of money in the long term.
