 | Welcome to the New Zealand Regional Groups. This periodic posting is designed to answer some of the questions you may have about these groups.
1. What should be posted here?
According to the Charter :
"Any posts which deal with things of interest to or about the area or region are welcome and on-topic in this group. This includes discussions of local activities and events, local non-commercial buy/sell/wanted posts, local issues and personalities and anything else that relates to the area covered by the group."
2. What should not be posted here?
Binaries Chain letters, including "Make Money Fast" articles Known hoaxes (like the "Good Times Virus") Articles posted as separate copies to several newsgroups (spam) Articles excessively cross-posted Articles containing significantly more quoted than new content Duplicate/rapidly reposted messages Commercial messages of any kind.
3. What is considered excessively cross-posted?
A1 : More than four groups
A2: If it is cross-posted to a non regional nz.* group.
4. But this FAQ is cross-posted to more than 4 groups
Umm, aah. Well as the follow-up is set to one group only, then that is sort of okay. More to the point administrative posts such as FAQs, RFDs, and CFVs are OK to be crossposted.
5. Should I cross-post to non-regional nz.* groups like nz.general
Basically No.
This defeats the point of having regional groups. Please post to either a regional group or a national group but not both, or if you do please set followups to one group only.
6. What regional groups are there?
nz.reg.auckland.general All about the City of Sails and Region nz.reg.wellington.general Absolutely positively capital posts nz.reg.northland.general Cyberdiscussion of the far North nz.reg.hamilton.general Where it's happening. nz.reg.bay-of-plenty.general Plenty to talk about in the BoP nz.reg.gisborne.general First to see the sun each day nz.reg.hawkes-bay.general The sunny wine capital of NZ nz.reg.taranaki.general Taranaki - the energy province nz.reg.manawatu.general Palmie North and Wanganui on-topic here nz.reg.nelson.general The top talk of the South Island nz.reg.west-coast.general There's gold in those postings nz.reg.canterbury.general Tales from the Garden City & Canterbury nz.reg.dunedin.general NZ's Edinburgh is discussed all right here nz.reg.southland.general Net Discussions frrrom the deep south
7. What are the boundaries of the regional groups?
Very roughly they correspond to the boundaries of the 14 Regional Councils. Don't worry if you don't know what these are, for neither will most of us. Just use common sense for which group is most appropriate for your posts.
8. Where can I post commercial messages?
nz.biz.misc is the proper group for this
9. When were these groups created?
In November 1997 following lots of discussion and a vote amongst NZ Usenet users. The results will be placed on a web page shortly.
Future regional groups, if desired, can be proposed in the group nz.net.admin. See the FAQ listed in question 12 for more details on this.
10. Who wrote this FAQ?
I did.
11. Why?
Because I proposed the groups and want to make it as easy as possible for people to use these groups properly, which hopefully this FAQ will assist towards.
Any changes or suggestion are most welcome and should be sent to david@home.net.nz. It is planned that this FAQ will be posted weekly for the first two months and then fortnightly thereafter.
12. Any last advice?
Yep, don't forget not to excessively cross-post
And also have a read of the FAQ for the whole New Zealand hierarchy if you haven't already done so. It is at http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/nz-news-hierarchy/
