 | Are you planning to support latest java release in opera 8 ?
I have 8.0b1 and even though I have added jre 5.0 (1.5), it still uses older 1.4.2 version

 | On Linux you can go to Preferences -> Multimedia and set the path to the Java JRE that Opera uses. Don't remember if this is applicable for the windows version.
Works great for me in Linux.

 | On my Linux installation I don't have something like that, but it turns out to be very easy to get Opera to use a particular Linux. I just created a file called ~/.opera/javapath.txt and placed the single line:
/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_01/jre/lib/i386/
in it. Done.

In windows, simple combobox allowing to choose from different jvm versions (as listed in windows registry) would do.

FYI: If it uses the older version, it's because the Windows registry tells it to do so.

Windows? Go to the Control Panel, you'll find a Java Plugin Control Center, you can use it to choose among installed versions of Java. (Not certain if Opera follows it, but they should.)

Technically, neither does IE. Yet the plugin contol center still determines which version of Sun's Java will be used in IE.

1) Uninstall all existing java versions. 2) clean the registry with a proper cleaning tool like regvac. 3) reboot 4) install java 1.5 5) start opera

Here's the reg keys that Opera cares about :
>- REGEDIT4 >- >- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft] >- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Plug-in\1.4.1_01] >- "JavaHome"="C:\\Program Files\\Network\\Web Browsers\\Java" >- >- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment] >- "CurrentVersion"="1.4" >- >- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.4] >- "JavaHome"="C:\\Program Files\\Network\\Web Browsers\\Java" >- "MicroVersion"="1" >- "RuntimeLib"="C:\\Program Files\\Network\\Web Browsers\\Java\\bin\\client\\jvm.dll" >- >- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.4.1_01] >- "JavaHome"="C:\\Program Files\\Network\\Web Browsers\\Java" >- "MicroVersion"="1" >- "RuntimeLib"="C:\\Program Files\\Network\\Web Browsers\\Java\\bin\\client\\jvm.dll"
There is more (activex/iexplorer/netscape) but I haven't included them for the sake of brevity.

Yep, that is how you do it ;) Keeping two versions of java around is a recepie for headaches.

I did not mean kill the complete registry.. In fact those tools tody it up and kick out unused entries.
> I installed Java 1.5 after uninstalling the previous version, but didnt > clean the registry, and Opera recognized the new version perfectly.
Cleaning the registry with a registry cleaning tool is just for the sake of uninstalling something _completely_. Some uninstallers like to leave rubbish in the registry and sometimes this rubbish can be a part of the problem.

Have you tried changing the settings in the Java Control Panel? (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Java Plug-in)
Anyway, it's not recommended you have multiple Java runtimes installed. You should uninstall all of them, then re-install just the one you want.

Generally you're right, but I developing applets is part of my job, so it's often necessary to have two java versions. And for a work computer, reinstalling everything is not the best solution.
Sometimes I think that Java support is not top priority for Opera right know, so it's native java handling may be a bit behind Sun plug-in.
For example - Sun applet catching seems to be a better solution than catching applets in browser cache.

May be this is the right tool for: http://www.gwendragon.de/tools/opera/index.html It's in german, but I think you can undestand how to use it anyway. With this tool it's possible to use any installed Opera with any of the installed Sun JVMs.

Sun's plug-in has jar cache separated from browser cache. applet jars are only downloaded if they are newer than cached, but this is verified EACH TIME. This way you always have the latest version and do not have to worry that your applet will be deleted from cache only because it is older than specified in "cache other" setting or because your browser cache is full. (For me this is works similar to jar memory in mobile phones)
Furthermore, if your applet is in browser cache (like in opera) event though newer version is on the server you may still get the version from cache.
In several cases, java in Opera behaves differently than plug-in, what causes compatibility problems (need to test applets on two platforms). For example, when I try to print from applet, Sun plug-in asks for permission, while Opera silently refuses - unless you check java console: Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-1" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.lang.RuntimePermission queuePrintJob) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPrintJobAccess(Unknown Source) at java.awt.print.PrinterJob.getPrinterJob(Unknown Source) ...
The last thing - after I installed Java 1.5 next to 1.4.2, browsers using plug-in automatically switched to newer version, while Opera stayed with 1.4.2 (it seems version info is stored somewhere in opera.ini file)

Being concerned about this, I searched, and I could find no version info for Java in any Opera .ini files. Check you registry.

As explained, Opera scans the Windows registry, and uses the version it is told to use.

If there are multiple versions installed, will Opera's scan stop on the first one it finds? And could this be the earlier version?
I solved my problems with Java by completely uninstatlling all versions and then installing only the latest version.

The Windows Registry tells Opera what the active Java version is. That's all there it to it. I don't know how the various Sun JRE installers store or fail to store that information properly in the Windows Registry.
