For some unknown reason, my newsreader, XanaNews, had been ignoring
opera.beta for weeks, but not opera.general or the other opera-related
newsgroups, thus leading me to wrongly believe opera.beta was
essentially dormant. My apologies for the above rather snotty comment.

I don't know if quirks mode is involved here, but this
perfectly valid, although deprecated, contraption causes
some amount of text following it to disappear:
